It's hard to make judgements about things in a vacuum. And sometimes only possible to get how references are meant when something's seen in it's natural habitat.I know nothing about this band and where they come from, so perhaps I take the references to survivalism, smalltown America, nuclear family, pseudo-relgious sects, 60s utopian futurism, apocalypse, picnics and popcorn in the wrong way.
But this video holds together well and works with the track. It's also strangely touching - perhaps for anyone who was a kid in the 80s, the idea of your last act of defiance in the event of the sudden onset of WW3 (or similar holocaust) is a familiar one.
It's good pastiche and a good story, that seems to hold true despite (maybe because of) the satire. Brash and subtle all in one.

I've seen it a few times now and it has really, really grown on me. Also, it cost a very modest $20,000 - to me it seems like they would have made the same video with $200,000 - which says something.

whoever said something about jared hess being a "one-trick" pony hit the nail on the head....ekc, June 30, 2005 7:14:50 PM CEST
bootyfully art direction in this video. and if it cost 20 grand... it was really good. and even if he is a one trick pony.... he is still miles ahead of any of you dorks.... but the Shins cover is actually better then the original.
