Fiona Apple "Fast As You Can" : Dir. Paul Thomas Anderson

kevathens, November 22, 2006 at 12:21:50 AM CET

The tube kinda amplifies (in a bad way) the cool out-of-sync parts of this great vid. Seriously: can't we get away from this tube thing?

Also, someone yell at Epic and tell them to release a DVD comp of her vids, and Macy Gray while they're at it. We're missing some key Romanek and Sednaoui vids here, not to mention PTA.

lusk81, November 22, 2006 at 12:44:21 AM CET

kev: The vid is supposed to fall out of synch. The piece was shot with a small bolex and pt is constantly pulling various in camera tricks: lens rotation, speed change, etc.

kevathens, November 22, 2006 at 1:02:43 AM CET

That's what I meant in there: Tube makes it look like it's Tube's fault, not PT's.

I'm all for the anti-tube movment. webspace is easy enough to purchase.

a-morphic, November 22, 2006 at 2:00:03 PM CET

A great great video, pulling apart all the simple codes and conventions and making us aware that we are watching a video being shot, aware of the director..........the director is PTA, magnolia and punch drunk are masterpieces........but would i have liked this video if another director had lensed it?.......would i be saying cliched, twee, too self aware.......?

benroll, November 22, 2006 at 2:20:35 PM CET

I only discovered this video recently, but I have to say it's amongst my all time favourites. The style has a nervy, erratic edge, a loose, playful charm and an air of consideration all in the same breath.

But as a-morph points out, it's the interaction between the singer and the director that makes it. PTA is a clear presence in most shots, despite never being seen. Fiona emotes to the man behind the camera in a way that I've rarely seen.

Am I right in saying that they were an item at the time? It would make sense.

Incidentally, I couldn't find a non-Toob version on the web. It's available on iTunes in glorious 640x480 tho'. One worth shelling out on.

kevathens, November 22, 2006 at 2:28:26 PM CET

Dunno if they were an item at this filming, but they were later.

scooper, November 22, 2006 at 2:44:23 PM CET

Love it. By far her best video. Didn't she do three with PTA? Colours and film texture are pure bolex. One of those rare videos that makes you really want to get your camera out right then and there. Timeless too, which is one of the hardest things to achieve in both music and film...

progosk, November 22, 2006 at 2:53:42 PM CET

apparently there's a wmv version on aol here; someone clevver on a pc in the u.s. might be able to pull it in (nothin' doin' on my euro-mac...)

kevathens, November 22, 2006 at 2:58:02 PM CET

scoop: They did four together.. Across the Universe, Limp, Paper Bag, this

prog: That's a wmv, actually. Another AOL version I found (rtsp:real stream) was broken or not working for me.

progosk, November 22, 2006 at 3:20:52 PM CET

only. just. saw. across the universe.

words defy.

a-morphic, November 22, 2006 at 4:04:28 PM CET

UUUmmmmm......speechless, why hasnt this video gotten the recognition it so richly deserves.......why is sam bayer winning MTV awards with his oh so cool stubble grating face. This promo should set the bar, the standard, the fusion of images, music, editing, lighting, direction......all combine to create a mesmerising few minutes.

boey, November 22, 2006 at 5:04:50 PM CET

This video had some nice moments but didn't really do it for me...However, that Across the Universe progosk just linked... BLEW MY MIND!! FANTASTIC VIDEO ! BRILLIANT ! Sooooooooo cinematic.

kevathens, November 22, 2006 at 5:23:15 PM CET

For what it's worth, Fast as You Can was a Buzz Clip back in the day. I'm not sure it was a Breakthrough Video, but it may have been. (Across the Universe was a Breakthrough Vid.) For me it can be added to the thankfully-sizable pantheon of great, classic music videos.

kevathens, November 22, 2006 at 5:45:34 PM CET

btw P, at least for me AOL's rtsp and mms streams are inaccessible. Can anyone get that?

progosk, November 22, 2006 at 5:47:32 PM CET

fast as you can is viewable in fairly high quality on sony's brightcove "Music Box" (as are paper bag and limp, for the pta freaks among you). unfortunately, since it crashes my safari, i have no way to get to the actual file (firefox shows me the vid but can't grok the flv). mebbe someone's abler...

and: i think i'm with boey/a-morphic on this one.

a-morphic, November 22, 2006 at 6:00:16 PM CET

by the way..........whilst this arena is the cause of such energy............BAN ALL U-TUBE VIDEOS NOW..........they clog up the site, they are the epitomy of ineptitude, and surely if they must remain cannot you........herr progosk........captian progosk.......whoever you are, wherever you lay.........whatever you are eating..........can you not police these vile things...?

robodrug, November 22, 2006 at 6:20:12 PM CET

For once.... OK maybe 2 or 4 times, u2b has a better rez file than I have! I got a 40mb mpg TV rip file that ain't as pristine as the u2b post, which I got from the Fiona posse over at the now defunct Adego Breezes Forum ages ago But then it woz the only file knocking 'round on the net at the time

I got a pristine 87mb file ov 'Cross the Uni' so sharp u could shave a donkey wiv it, iv u want me to put it up on 'Mega', Usendit unfortunately has terminated my free a/c

progosk, November 22, 2006 at 6:21:14 PM CET

to quote a prez: those who desire to give up freedom in order to gain security will not have, nor do they deserve, either.

oh, and robod: for god's sakes man, what are you waiting for?!

robodrug, November 22, 2006 at 6:25:39 PM CET

Think this file shows that ppl can if they're arsed, upload a better quality rez onto u2b 'Cross the Uni' right gimme an hr or so

kevathens, November 22, 2006 at 6:27:06 PM CET

P: What are you, um, on about?

a-morph: If it becomes a big enough issue a whole new site would have to be started with a roster of contributors.

progosk, November 22, 2006 at 6:29:07 PM CET

bans? censorship? policing? no fucking patriot act round here if i can bloody help it!

oh, and: here's an ipoddable h264 mp4 of fast as you can. feel free to post up top.

a-morphic, November 22, 2006 at 7:00:00 PM CET

THE PATRIOT ACT...........i loved patriot games, but progosk......there are times when antville becomes swamped with post upon post upon post of tirgid videos by the same director, the same artist, the same production house.......you scroll down and down........little care or attention has gone into these postings, they are posted for ego and cheap publicity so i implore you to keep watch over this........those who really care, who have a true passion often get lost in the quagmire........?

progosk, November 22, 2006 at 7:13:14 PM CET

in case i wasn't clear enough: there is nothing i can (nor is there anything i would) do about people's below-par posts. they will receive the antville usual: be ignored or berated, as fits the bill, and ultimately get bored and leave.

the self-regulating mechanisms of community blogs such as antville (think metafilter, but catering to a much smaller niche) are myriad and not to be tampered with.

what makes a community healthy, rather than listless&resigned, is the untiring energy and goodwill of its members. to quote another prez: ask not what your [insert relevant item here] might do for you, but...

paranoidrewy, November 23, 2006 at 7:46:51 AM CET

FYI, there is a dvd of pta music videos. i believe it was around the time of punch-drunk. it had 6 videos or so, but it was made only for friends of Ghoulardi (his prod co.) A friend had a copy but sold it before i could get to it. i saw them on ebay years ago.

benroll, November 23, 2006 at 11:44:00 AM CET

I'm in agreement on the censorship issue with messrs. Progosk and Franklin.

I think though that the Videoville / spam problem and teh Gorriliez illustrate well, that on occasion, sheer weight of numbers can overwhelm a small band of posters, no matter how dedicated. (in videoville vs. spam, spam won and in the case of teh Gorriliez, they were censored n'est-ce pas?)

The antville posting brigade is a small core of prolific posters and a very small core of very prolific posters.

It's not an overwhelming problem right now, but that might change if embedded YouTube started to outnumber other postings by a factor of 20.

My point is that Antville is not insusceptible to a 'hostile takeover'. The question is how the community responds to avoid the choice between censorship or an unusable site. Policing isn't the answer, but a coordinated effort by the self-regulators probably is. So yes, Mr. JFK, what can we do for our [insert relevant item here]?"

Hopefully it won't come down to... "we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, (...) we shall never surrender!" ;-)
