wsj case study on this:"Videos like "Yea Yeah" typically have no formal distribution to MTV or other cable channels, or online video outlets like Yahoo. Instead, their spread relies on video-sharing sites and a widely read network of music and video blogs. One of the most popular of these is videos.antville.org, a noncommercial site that recently featured a new video from Norah Jones next to one by the Leningrad Cowboys.
Matt and Kim shot the "Yea Yeah" video in late November with help from a filmmaking friend, Nick Chatfield-Taylor. Mr. Johnson, 24, says most of the budget went to purchasing food, though some was prepared by Ms. Schifino, 26, or pulled from her refrigerator.
Since the clip was posted on YouTube and the band's MySpace page earlier this month, it has been viewed more than 30,000 times. Sales of the band's debut album, released in October, have risen about 30% since the video's release, says Franki Chan, owner of IHeartComix, the independent record label that released the album. More importantly, Mr. Chan says, the video piqued the interest of music retailers. About 300 stores now stock the album, up from about 200 before the video, according to Mr. Chan."
