quite a departure from the style of his previous videosframescourer, March 11, 2008 11:00:55 PM CET
Two Questions1) The 1960s aesthetic for videos to tracks from Overpowered seems consistent. Unfortunately, so does the merely Okayness of said mvs. When are we going to get one that does this brilliant album some justice?
2) How on earth have Albertin/Rokkit/EMI managed to get You Tube to play their video to such high quality?

After having worked in videos for 7 years I look at this and I say, 'now there is an artist unconvinced by the concept'. Roisin barely seems to connect to the idea and I almost get the sense that she's embarrassed by the proceedings. An example of this vibe that immediately comes to mind is the mascara-tear-stain scene; Roisin looks completely devoid of any emotion whatsoever despite the 'mise-en-scene' (as I'll call it here) being geared to indicate strong feelings.
I usually love Jaron's work and often feel irrational jealously in the 'why didn't I come up with that' vein. However, I didn't much like this and, although it'll damage my credibility in this post, I wasn't into the thermal-vision vid either.

i live in the US so i have no idea, but why is she a big deal? i find no appeal in her music nor do i find her at all charismatic or attractiveloz, March 12, 2008 3:06:28 PM CET
hmmm. i'm normally quite a fan of roisin's 'no-acting' style, but this leaves me a little meh. kalstark - actually i think you've got to assume this is HER idea, she's normally pretty heavily involved in her videos as far as i know, and seems to me the kind of thing she'd go for. agree that it doesn't marry to the song particularly tho.

I just keep imagining how better would be the result if this video was directed by La Chapelle. With the same idea, scenaries, budget and everything...tduncan, March 12, 2008 9:52:49 PM CET
Ya. The quality of this youtube video is damned good. How is it in such high res?captainmarc22, March 12, 2008 10:33:57 PM CET
the quality looks good because there's not a ton of movement in the shots. You might even say this was 'filmed for youtube.'I think she's pretty and the images are cool. it does have a Jaron feel to it, in my opinion. I just couldn't figure out if there was supposed to be a story or not, and if so, what it was.

This just doesn't 'feel' right. The music is suggesting something vastly different than what the visuals offer.dek, March 13, 2008 1:11:50 PM CET
The main source of noise for Youtube videos is the unfiltered resizing. If you upload your video at 320x240 already, Youtube won't have to resize it. Also, you can use a bilinear filtering to smoothen/soften the images (=> should straighten the spectrum => better quantization => looks better at low bitrate).kayser_sauze, March 13, 2008 2:18:50 PM CET
Ain't working for me though.
Edit: Now I know why: I hadn't updated flash in ages.

I read it as an homage to Cindy Sherman.

you might be right. in which case, it was doomed from the get-go...good soul department, March 17, 2008 7:36:39 PM CET
@mvaRoisin is a big deal because she is one half of the now-defunct cult band Moloko. She went solo a few years back, working w/ Matthew Herbert on her first solo project. This track comes from her second solo effort, which is considerably more commercial than her first. She writes all her own music & have delectable all-around style imo (check out her Gareth Pugh sessions). Roisin is originality in the raw when compared to the other pop divas out there today. Oh and I live in California. =)

Inverview with Jaron Albertin via Promo News"The idea of Roisin playing different characters came from the song, which is saying her partner knows her better than she knows herself,” explains Jaron. “The biggest reference was Cindy Sherman, in particular her book Centrefolds, which we referenced for the look we wanted. But I’d say it was inspired by rather than a recreation of Sherman. We didn’t dive really deep into character development."
