Bettye Lavette "Talking Old Soldiers" - (Dir. Lex Halaby)

Classy as hell.

Very nice cinematography, a smooth edit, and an emotional piece. A solid video overall! On the flip side, I found myself losing interest by the last 1/3. The same shots began resurfacing a few too many times.
It'd be perfect if the song was about 30 - 45 seconds shorter or if the video had one or two more tricks up its sleeve.

a step outside of his usual repertoire...lex still manages to make a crappy song seem worthy of his amazing videos. it definitely shows a versatility which standsout in a sea of one-trick ponies.

There goes that crazy broad again. Super pretty. I kept waiting for Jim Jarmusch to show up with a cup of coffee.
Well done, sir. Beautiful.

I'm liking this recent string of female-centric work that Halaby's been doing. It plays to his enormous strength as one of the last music video directors that gives a shit about the quality and composition of the image. That sincere, classical approach to visual integrity is so much harder to pull off than taking a lo-fi approach to a hi-concept, the favored aesthetic work flow here on antville. There's so little room for failure with a project like this. Enough gushing. Cheers to Halaby, one of the last tuxedo wearing gents at the party.budget, 8. August 2008, 20:54
