The Dead Weather "Die by the drop" Dir: Floria Sigismondi
Floria's clearly talented but her more recent videos feel a little dated. She seems almost to be stealing from her younger self and the end result comes across like a lesser made knock-off. Or, perhaps her style just doesn't work as well in 2010.
Kal: I kinda disagree. There's some strong work here, but for me this has the same problem I feel happens with a lot of her video work - both old and new. She creates this interesting, dark, abstract staging of an event that never seems to really complete itself. So halfway, it's a repetition of whatever is already happening. For instance, In this video: girl in cape with mirror face taunts man in chair as masked band plays together.
Although it's beautiful, we hit a wall and never really get passed this point. You know, her glass face breaks only to reveal the same singer we've been seeing the whole time. It's just the same elements, repeated over and over.
This and other videos of her would have more power I feel if they didn't stop. If they somehow moved toward and found an end point.
wanna know how i feel?
I have to agree with Kal. The whole setup just feels very 90s.
It is like a mixture between a Nine Inch Nails video and a Smashing Pumpkins video from Mellancollie and the Infinite Sadness.
It reminds me of here earlier works; Marilyn Manson's the Beautiful People, for instance
90s aesthetic is now aesthetic. For example look at Gaga videos, very 90s shock pop. Floria is an original and awesome. Her videos from the 90s have a heavy impact on a lot of the young artists today. I'm just happy people are still making cool videos.
Okay, looking for a little help.... So i just got through watching the new Janelle Monae video, and now have seen this mirror mask gag used in 3 videos this year. Yeasayer -ambling alp Janelle Monae - Tightrope Dead Weather - Die by the drop i have to assume we saw an image or there was something that spurred this, but it's getting a little laughable, i'm just trying figure out where this meme got it's start. any ideas???
azer, only seen the yeasayer vid, but I assume it's taken from Maya Deren's film 'meshes in the afternoon' en.wikipedia.org
