Kylie Minogue - "2 Hearts" - Dir: Dawn Shadforth
This'll probably be taken down right-quick, but I thought I'd throw it up anyway.

Insta-commentary: One of the worst things about 2007 is that videos are now made small. All of the bombast of the music video is gone because everyone's tailoring these videos for the small screen.
Up until the last minute, it feels like this video - and, by association, Kylie Minogue and Dawn Shadforth - has had all of the life sucked out of it because of the Internet.
When our computers start finally succumbing to the Apple TV (etc) phenomenon, music videos will probably return to being filled with life again.
I can't wait.
KEV: Your argument is flawed over the simple technical fact that this entire piece was shot in mediums and wides.
I'm not sure I agree with Kev's analysis either. I think the scope of music videos has more to do with the falling budgets. I'm a video director myself and it's becoming more and more of a struggle every day to come up with something that isn't artist-in-bare-studio (which is partially why I enjoyed Robyn's 'Handle Me' so much - it turned the whole idea of constraints on its head).
Now, with regards to the Kylie vid, I was thoroughly underwhelmed. Normally, I enjoy Kylie's on screen persona very much. But here it seems muted, weakened, almost as if (dare I even suggest it) this is still a post-cancer Kylie who is only just recovering her 'sea-legs'. It feels almost like Dawn Shadforth wanted to coddle Kylie; make sure she didn't do too much and over exert herself.
Where is the larger than life entertainer that I'm used to? She definitely doesn't exist in this latest promo.

The video and song are like Goldfrapp-lite. I wonder if there was any conflict of interest for Dawn, who has a long history with both.
yes, i'm commenting on my own post.
did i spend half of my first viewing thinking Nicole Kidman had been subbed in as a body/face double? maybe.
also, tread carefully with the goldfrapp comparisons and/or accusations of plagiarism. goldfrapp ripped off glam rock in the first place. not that i'm not boning for their new material.
goldfrapp? glamrockripoff? scissorsisteresk? sure: the kyliesystem is this: reminding to something but being purely kyliesm on the other hand. is this a good video? no. is this a good song? don't know. is this a good kyliesong? yeah, i think so, i got it in my brain after one view. it's like the result of a football game reached by an unattractive game: who gives a fuck in two weeks? THIS IS KYLIE MINOGUE! I'M LOVING IT!
Love the video, love the song - great job by Dawn. Anyone know who shot it?
It's fine, if a little prosaic - it's a video designed to be reproduced as a stage show. How long ago does Out of my Head feel?!
I'd love to see Kylie directed by David LaChapelle, although it may be a bit late now.
