Jay-Z "Girls, Girls, Girls" / Scarface "My Block"
Marc Klasfeld has two great faux one-take videos. "Girls" has a Gondry reference!
Both are embedded here.
Hey Kevathens,
scarface isn't bad. But.. neither of these are one take videos my friend. Any one disagree with that assesment?
Jay Z doesn't look in THAT good shape!
as for scarface, I didn't know that the gaffer was able to change day to night with his laptop.
The question is, should a one take video have to actually be one take or just look like one take. And if it's done well, how do we know the difference?
bowieknife does correctly point out that the above fulfil neither criterion.
Maybe 'cutless' videos would be a better term.
The ersatz-one-take thing defines these two as a whole for me. Nothing else in them feels real either.
daily benroll ersatz-count: 2 (yellow alert).
Benroll,
i understand your reasoning. But.. as someone who once in a while says "action" and "cut" i have to say that one take is one take is one take. And that's really all that can be said about it.
It's also what seperates Marc Klasfeld from Michel Gondry.
When a director embarks upon a one take video, he is aware of the legacy, the challenge. This director obviously preffered safety.
bowieknife:
I quite agree! A one take video should be made from one take.
However, it puts plenty of classic one take videos on dubious ground. Taking Mr. Gondry as a case in point, is Star Guitar one take? How about 'Je danse le mia'.
Maybe it's all about the spirit of one takeness.
progosk: I'll have to shut up for today in case I go critical, but sham's a bit harsh, fake is what you get down the market and simulacra need to be handled with the utmost care! ;-)
legacy?? that scarface video is great and i don't think it is trying to pull itself off as a one shot video. it just shows things happening at the same time. it also has content which is rarely discussed. star guitar is a good point
Don't tell me I have to take Spice Girls "Wannabe" off the list! Because I won't!! You can't make me!
why would star guitar be a one take video?
Because it appears to be one take.
It appeared in kevathens' list of definitive one take videos posted on this site a month or two ago. (although he includes the rider that it includes faux one takers).
That's my point. It just depends where you draw the line in your subcategory. Of course it's all an enormous red herring creatively speaking.
Anyone who appreciates the technical achievement of a true one taker can satisfy the cravings with a night in with a DVD of Rope. They don't come much better than that.
phantomcake, great point.
Gondry is great at style, but the Scarface video has nothing to do with style - but everything to do with content and message with Gondry's videos have nothing to do with. Most Klasfeld videos are all about content, which somehow isn't discussed in music video.
