Gift of Gab - "Rat Race"
This video is minimal. No new ground broken, but it's still dope.
here's an article on how it was made: www.uemedia.net
Maybe I don´t get the point, but I think technically it´s horrible and the splitscreen idea is used in a very boring way. I mean, the lighting is bad, in the closeup you can even see his spots and bad skin. Wouldn´t they color correct the shots?
The directs seem pretty savvy, I'm sure they color corrected it as much as possible. you might be noticing the compression. Maybe Gab's just ugly, I don't know. Not that it's any excuse, but maybe the uni-lit scheme is because they had to light it so it worked on 3 angles. I saw it on a big screen and it looked pretty good. As for the vid itself, I'm not too fond of the greenscreen/city stuff but I like the split boxes. It's not as interesting a splitscreen idea as say, the latest Blink vid (a great vid) but I think it works well here. A clean performance vid with a few gimmicks.
the videos' alright - gets boring after a minute - yeah it's one of the chubbiest rappers we've seen in a while - what I'm surprised of is at the end the amount of crew members on set. What were they all doing?
Sometimes even the simplest looking videos need lots of PA's to keep it running smoothly. I thought this was pretty good. They obviously had no money and they took a simple performance and spiced it up with some interesting split-screen choices. Like jdub said, it's not breaking any new ground, but it held my interest.
BINKY that's crazy. Take another look at the vid, it's four cameras set up on what looks like lowell sticks. All cameras are minidv and may weigh a pound (tops!). Mr. Gab isn't moving, he's just standing in one place. If our talent is static against static backdrops, I'm sure the crew is doing even less (rememeber the only movement in the vid is when Gab walks two feet off of set to "our transition shot" of him flowing some more).
If you read the interview attached to this posting, the DP talks about how his AC, Grip, and Gaff team were changing and labeling dv tape stock. What the fuck...
My two huge questions are:
-
What the fuck are all those people doing on set? All those people cost money. Money that should've went into making this a stronger promo.
-
What the fuck are all these people doing on THAT set? It looks like a purely professional and expensive rental (again, money that should've went into making a better promo). I swear to god we could've shot that thing in your basement with workman lights.
I think the piece looks cheap and uninspired. I hate how multichannel tends to be the quick fix to everything.
Best Video Produced for Under $25,000 at the MVPA awards..??? I don't get it.
I don't get it either. Most budgets we're working in Europe with are way less than 25000 and ten times more interesting. But I never heard about this MVPA awards. Do you know any other alternative (besides MTV and so) music video competitions? I'm gonna get me some prices.
i dropped by the set for this video when they shot it, and was hoping for something better to come out of it. nice experiment but could've been better.
