Broadcast: Tender Buttons: Dir. Ramon Bloomberg
Another new one shot video...
fucking Beautiful.
Cool! Is Tender Buttons the name of the song? www.pacific-rock.com
somebody bought themselves a gregory crewdson book
...and congrats to Ramon for being the latest one-take video.
He likes the slow stuff, and I like it too.
Great stuff Ramonel!
This guy is one of my favorite new directors. I can't wait to see what he cooks up next....up until now I've never been disappointed and often times inspired.
v intense. it's up there with thraves' scientist for the study of post-crash trauma for me.
it was a really well done one take, but it didn't work for me.
it started off really well - a lot of promise, but after the crashed cars... a pile of sod and a burning chair?
and how does it get topped off? with some interesting reveal that expands the concept? no - a chick looking in a box. lame.
Actually, come to think of it. Car crash wondering girl on hill side finding box weird transition....Mulholland Drive...Lynch
I agree. salad fingers obviously isn't thinking too hard about it. it's the box of death or something no? Crewdson meets Lynch.
a similar video for 'always worth it' by australia's sarah blasko -

How about Crewdson meets Lynch meets Dicorcia? It also reminded me of Spike's MV "California" WAX. Good work, Ramonel!!
It looks like there's some sort of face hiding in the picture. right behind the car. The ghost of a sailor...or the burger king guy maybe.
i totally see the face. i heard it took a week of work at the mill to integrate it in the picture.
Tender Buttons is actually the name of the song:
I put an (almost) complete linkograpy on my blog:
(It's hard to find something about a band named Broadcast...)
Mysterious, well executed, visually pleasant if not completely arresting. I liked the fact that it made no sense. And the fade at the end is a marvel.
fantastic video! and I think Broadcast have only made one other video.
that shit is dope.
I like Ramon's penchant for car crashes! This is cool, but it doesn't work for me either. The timing of events/background seems off. And I can't accept it as non-sensical...the non-sequiturs like a burning chair and mysterious box are too prominent to just accept.
Which leaves me asking...Is one fooled into thinking it's interesting/deep because it doesn't make sense? Is it just a copout that's nicely shot? And why are her sandals still on? Maybe that's good...I don't know, either way it's better than Thraves coldplay vid.
A few things, there is no "e" at the end of Ramon. "Tender Buttons" - a little Sylvia Plath anyone? And where do you see a face?
there's definately something arresting about this, and bloomberg's 'private shipwreck' video (though heavily influenced by crewdson as has been said) and i like both videos, but i have to agree that something about his sense of ambiguity just doesn't work for me. it leaves me a bit cold and wanting more, where i feel that it should resonate. don't get me wrong, i'm all for ambiguity and mysterious, inexplicable imagery.
tender buttons (the name) refers to broadcast's equipment...and the idea of using electronics to make emotional sounds...and its actually not sylvia plath, but gertrude stein who has a collection of surrealist style poems called tender buttons.
i immediately picked up on the 'mulholland drive'-ish themes of the video...though visually it doesn't do it for me like david lynch does. the one shot thing is cool....but it feels arbitrary to me. it makes me ask "why" and/or "who cares?" if you're gonna do it...you have to make it work...like michel gondry's video for kylie minogue's "come in to my world". the song is crap but the video is at least imaginative and uses the one shot technique in a way that it creates something new. besides being a technical feat!
also, i'm a big broadcast fan and this video doesn't fit their music to me. i think ramon should give the video to AIR (the french band)...it suits them better. it actually reminds me of their "cherry blossom girl" video for some reason.
when i listen to this song...i picture something much more abstract and colorful...the lyrics were generated using automatic writing...i feel like the visuals should be less representational...and more surreal. burning chairs and hobbling victims doesn't do it for me.
it would also have been nice to have the band in the video. oi.
Amazing. I love it. I love the lighting at the end, especially the juxtaposition of artificial and natural.
Still kicking: mp4 (don't let the name mislead you), swf, swf. Post continues here.
