ARCTIC MONKEYS - I bet you look good on the dancefloor
Directed by Blackdog's Huse Monfaradi. Telecine by the Mill.
zZZzzzZZz
I want to find the NME (?) reviewer who said this song is "How Soon Is Now with a real swagger" and wring their neck. Hey, it's topped the UK charts already, but ick. And the video is, yes, Zzzzzzzz.
trying to get some sort of 'old grey whistle test' vibe. Rubbish. Says a lot when you have to credit the people who did the telecine. Photos by Snappy Snaps.
It was actually shot on video, so I think the coloring is pretty damn good.
now why would Lusk81 post this me wonders...???
ARSEFACE: Everytime I post something someone criticizes about WHY I posted it. I have no affiliation in any way to the people who made this.
I keep up on the mill as I think their work is solid. I saw this recently, and decided to throw it on. Love it or hate it. This is antville. End of story.
I think this is cool, arctic monkeys are solid. The more posts the better, why hate on it? I think crediting telecine is good, for the people in the film industry it is actually relevant. Calling it rubbish says more about the person hating on it more that anything else.
This is the first time I've posted to antville. I am inspired to do so because I am dummified that anyone would complain about this video. This video is excellent. Huse has mad skillz and he killed this one. Its simple, low-fi rawness fits the song dead on. The fact that this video was recorded live should be enough for us to all bow down at its greatness. Long live Huse.
people, this is rock and roll.
Quick! Someone has a different opinion to the rest of us, let’s start hurling personal insults. Just because I’m not overly enamored with the promo doesn’t mean I have it in for the Mill. Just remind me to thank Seiko for getting me to work on time this morning. Solid work, guys.
there's no concept here that hasn't been done a million times. I'd pick the Strokes video (Last Night?) or even Stone Temple Pilot's Big Bang Baby as far superior versions of live TV video. Daft Punk's "Robot Rock" was also awesome.
Maybe this is what the Arctic Monkees wanted, and then, sure, the director pulled it off (with very little creativity). Based on the no-frills approach, I'd give him a thumbs down.
As for telecine? Sounds like guys in post appreciate this thing more than music video commissioners or fans would. Does it carry the video?
the bassist carries the video.
This video was made for the fans, thats what makes it so great. All of the TV video examples listed above are far more stylized. Huse's video was not only low fi but it was unintrusive. Like the fingers said, "people, this is rock n' roll." It doesn't have to always be a film festival. I'm pretty sure that John Moule is plenty happy with the way this turned out and after Huse goes on a monster video run I think we'll all see how much the other commissioners and bands appreciate this video as well.
all i can say is that in the end i'm glad that white people learned how to play the guitar.
now i've seen some Old Grey Whistle Test footage, i can appreciate the whole thing a bit better. clever in-joke, i guess, well-executed. but to cry genius is a slightly tall order (though no doubt huse's a fine chap).
I gots to agree with the above. It's a nod in the right direction. It refrences a mood, which I think is achieved. And anyone into film making over any platform should be able to recognise and appreciate all parts of the process. It's all about the sum of theparts, (inc. post). Afterall telecine is gonna effect what you see on the screen. How can this be a part of the process that is any less important than the others?
It should also be noted that this video is an actually real live performance using antique television broadcast cameras. Rather than the fake retro TV performance we have all seen a million times. Huse is the man.
