The best place for information on split screen film is James Seo's excellent site: www.splitscreen.us .
Wow, that site is awesome. Anyone know of any work online about how the visual cortex processes split screens / average numbers of independent visual feeds a brain can process at once and what that's doing to the Brodman parts of the brain? Like I think psychiatrists have proven that the average person can only process two audio streams of conversation and decipher them intelligibly at once. I wonder what it is for visuals, given that we all have much more processing power dedicated to that chunk. On the odd occasion I've called a live edit I'm always amazed it even works.
The best split screen ever committed to music video is Michel Gondry's Cibo Matto video for Sugar Water. I don't think there's any disagreement on that.
Bloody great!!! Thanks guys :)
I love videos.antville....

Here's a PoP-ish example: Tegan & Sara "I Hear Noises" video www.mtv.com
The whole split-screen thing was heavily used in rap videos from the late 90's, early 00's. You know, the whole video-slice thing, they all did it. Hype has been using B-roll footage in the letterbox-bars in his latest videos, which hasn't proven to be his best idea, although somewhat interesting.
There have been a ton of these, so here's a couple off the top of my head
Porno For Pyros "Pets" (Dayton/Faris) Presidents of the USA "Some Postman" (Grant Marshall) Semisonic "Closing Time" (Applebaum) Destiny's Child "Emotion" (Lawrence) Hexstatic has done a few Los Del Rio "Macarena" (right?) Amon Tobin "4 Ton Mantis" (Sigismondi) Amel Larrieux "Get Up" (I think) (Sigismondi)
How about.. Madlib "Slim's Return" - and anything Blue Note related (St. Germain? that new Gabin vid?)
Hehe don't get me started!
