I don't usually post here, but thought this video was deserved of a comment. Quite simply, class. Superbly edited to the music (music lovers everywhere will note). Very impressed. All in agreement??

what a disgrace!

captainmarc22, January 5, 2006 at 10:26:46 PM CET

okay it's not nearly as good as the kenna video. overally, feels very DV and it feels like they run out of ideas.

I wish they had a better way to shoot the legs, some kind of stabilization. It just feels like a dude walking around w/ a camcorder.

the end shot is a great idea but it's done in a really dumpy way - I don't think a clever composite would have been too difficult.

there was that Stephen Malkmus video w/ the hands; and these are all similar to the head-closeup ones (like Four Tet).... I dunno; I'm tired of all of this genre.

daveg, January 5, 2006 at 11:36:50 PM CET

umm. it's only a copy of he was aware of those videos. Saying it's a disgrace is really unfair and just makes you look bad turk. Two people paint similar pictures on different sides of the atlantic, it doesn't mean one copied the other. Of course there would have been similar videos made before - Tell me something, if you see a video where it's the band performing on a stage with screaming fans - do you chime in saying that's a copy and a disgrace because it's been done before?. Of course you don't. Keep the criticism constructive or don't post.

captainmarc22, January 6, 2006 at 1:06:01 AM CET

daveg -

unfortunately, it is a copy, whether he has seen the video or not. Just one of those unlucky things. No different than writing a rock song which unknowningly lifts a melody from a previous song - you can still get sued.

Performance videos don't have the same intentions as concept videos, so the analogy doesn't work. If you go see the Rolling Stones in concert, would you say it was exactly like the U2 concert because they both took place in the same stadium?

I agree that "disgrace" is unfair.

skiller, January 6, 2006 at 2:02:48 AM CET

Would it be possible to see this other video?? Does anybody have a link??

skiller, it's in hakai's post:

daveg, January 6, 2006 at 2:20:03 AM CET

i disagree that it's a copy in any sense. What you are implying, is that no music video can ever be made that predominantly points at feet because it's been done. That's not true. First of all, it's from an entirely different perspective. Second of all, the songs involved are entirely different, the location, shots etc. are all completely different. Look at the way it's timed to the music and edited in the jennifer video. It's completely different. Yes they both had the same original premise, but luckily you can't copyright an idea, only it's execution, and the executions were sufficiently different for that talk of the possibility of being sued to be incorrect.

turk, January 6, 2006 at 2:35:13 AM CET

umm....you can copyrite an idea jackass that's the entire point of intellectaul property. The perspective and editing are clearly different yet incidental in this piece. They ad nothing to the narrative or tone of the song which is precisely why I called this vid a BAD copy. Making a video that has the same original premise as another video is lazy and down right disgraceful....thats right you heard me DISGRACEFUL!!!! Come up with an orginal idea or watch some more videos so you dont end either ripping someone off or looking like an utter fool.

daveg, January 6, 2006 at 3:45:54 AM CET

He didn't rip anyone off, stop implying that he did. These videos were made completely seperately. captainmarc22 is being fair and acknowledging this, and describing it well: it's unfortunate. What you are saying is that we all should have perfect knowledge of all works of art ever created all over the world. That's not possible. How is it lazy? How is it disgraceful? Your first sentence there says a lot about how much you know about what you are talking about, so I'm not sure why I'm bothering with responding to you - that and the name calling really makes your opinions kind of irrelevant. Do I have to go scour the archives of the last 30 years looking for evidence of prior art to try and 'disgrace' Kenna, which incidentally, is a cool video, but the reason I like the Jennifer one, and think it's clever, is because of the way it's timed to the music. That's my opinion, I'm interested in other people's and fine, don't like the video, but at least offer some critique and ideas for how it could be done better. Otherwise, don't post. Just don't type, it's so much easier for everyone.

skiller, January 6, 2006 at 7:39:06 PM CET

For what its worth, I think the videos are very different. Jennifer is a POV with a clever reveal at the end, just a pair of legs. The Kenna video is not POV, its a side profile. We see arms, there are people in the video. The whole point of the Jennifer one is that there are no people. Just legs!! Stories are very different. The only thing thats similiar is that we are looking at feet - I mean by that rational Spielberg ripped off the idea in a scene from Catch Me If You Can!! If they were both POV then I would agree - I think they're different. I quite like the style.

Is there such a thing as an original idea anymore???

captainmarc22, January 6, 2006 at 8:37:05 PM CET

"Is there such a thing as an original idea anymore???"

yup. And we all know it when we see it.

A huge chunk of ideas were "taken" in the last 15 years. In my opinion, being a great director in 2006 is mostly about an idea first, and execution second.

salad fingers, January 7, 2006 at 5:18:55 PM CET

forget this original idea debate, where's the debate about how retarded the ending was?!?! i can't believe i sat through that whole thing.

the only part i liked were the shots of them running together. that looked cool.

otherwise WOW - i was DAZZLED by all the different kinds of GRASS they thought of for him to walk over.

c-dub, January 7, 2006 at 5:53:29 PM CET

umm, the kenna video kicks this videos ass. But i give them props for having a concept. With this song, it could have easily gone down the warehouse/forest path...and yes, most ideas have been done, but its the spin you put on a convention that makes it if not completely, then somewhat original.

"A huge chunk of ideas were "taken" in the last 15 years. In my opinion, being a great director in 2006 is mostly about an idea first, and execution second."

i would be hard pressed to find any music video, drawing, movie, painting, or whatever for that matter that wasn't in some way inadvertent imitation. every great idea starts off another whether the artist admits it or not.
