Trash Wednesday "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" Micky Modo
pure genius. seriously though, how do videos like this get made? why do some people still think it's cool to put film grain on bad video? i felt like in the middle of it the band members were going to go shopping at the mall. this was terrible.
Somehow I find this deeply irritating. Musically, I'm astounded by the audacity to cover a classic in a soft rock style, whilst apparently thieving the guitar line from another Beatles track, 'Dear Prudence'.
But setting the whole thing to the most preposterously cheap and vainglorious band imagery is genius. The hopeless mutilation of different styles and techniques, loosely bound together under the banner of ersatz psychedelia displays a fit with the band and music which is nigh on perfect.
OK, maybe I just don't like the band. But I can't help thinking 'leave alone what you can't improve on'.
Or am I missing an inspired Spinal Tap moment?
I really liked this. As for the comments about film grain, I took it as an homage to the era from which the song originally came from 40 years ago. There's a complete tongue and cheek to the entire thing - I see colors and images from Sgt. Pepper and Yellow Submarine, yet there is a modern twist to it. And who was more vainglorious than the Beatles in their day with their matching hairdo's and outfits? This video captures all of that and there is humor throughout. Plus the 3-D effects and cardboard cutout figures. The whole thing lines up with what the Beatles were back then and a fun take on the lyrics visually and sonically. Very fitting. And newsflash - the original was psychedelic AND soft rock. This version rocks!
I agree. Very cool video. Captures the vibe of the original artist and put a new spin on it. I guess SOME people are allowed to use dirtying techniques on THEIR videos, but if anyone else does they will get crap for it. Ahh, but that's how the world seems to work these days. Anyway, I liked the video, I liked the song. The 3D stuff and the flattened images of the band members were great. And for once, it wasn't a video of a band standing in a rehearsal room playing and calling it a video. They really attempted to entertain and I for one was.
who are these people?
My pick for worst of 2006.
Yeah, this didn't seem to work at all. It just made the guys like idiots -- which I'm guessing was not the intention. The "girl, don't walk away" part (with the band members running away on the spot) was especially... harsh.
Wow! This is what I look for in an independent music video! While I've heard composite / hybrid songs in rap music, this arrangement seems to be a complete innovation for an alternative rock band. The production slams! The stops, musically and visually are very effective. Lyrically and visually the story seems to warn the girl (Lucy) that all that glitters is not gold! She starts out "pretty and perfect" but seems bruised and defeated by the end of the video, all to the "harsh" refrain of "girl don't walk away stupid....RUN!" With the use of unusual angles, textured layering, mixtures of black&white and color, slow and fast motion, and the combination of 3D and 2D, the director has created a dreamlike quality to the video. "Picture yourself in a boat on a river" is cleverly interpreted. The falling marshmellows made me smile. The clip gets better with multiple viewings. Let me be first to say this just might be a great video! I wouldn't be surprised to see a grammy nomination for this work. nyjoe2006
I don't get all the negativity, this video made me laugh my ass off. The humor throughout is divine. Really, the entire thing is so over the top, obviously on purpose. Lighten up!
I see a little Hitchcock, a little Polanski,a touch of White Stripes, a pinch of Green Day and a smidgen of Tim Burton! I like the vinyl scratches and the film scratches! Very unique! It's all very twisted like the song!
Kurosawa, Kubrick & Welles are fucking hacks compared to Micky Modo. Seriously - even Martin Luther King Jr. and Gandhi are dog shit next to this visionary.
anarya, killbill, fionaagain, jordan2000, nyjoe2006 - you guys are so dead on - it's like you're all on the exact same wavelength.
Point well made. I think it's fair to ask: Are these people related to Trash Wednesday or HIP Video (come on, Andy, say it ain't so!)? If so, guys, we would appreciate full disclosure.
I think it's also fair to accuse them of creating their own sound bytes, which is just plain lame, guys!
kev- one also has to calculate the odds of five supposedly unique posters all typing with textbook redacted punctuation and refusing to break up long paragraphs.
see guys, line breaks make it so much easier to read.
i'll lend you some hunting camo to blend in next time.
Hmm. Apparently I have a bunch of friends I don't know about. A conspiracy - how exciting!! Over something as important as a music video no less! For the record, because you seem to be in such need for disclosure - I found this video because someone sent me a link to see the William Shatner version (shudder) as a laugh. As a fan of Brit-Pop, I personally liked it and commented. I came back again to get the link to show someone else this version and found all this crap instead. And as for answering to such in-depth grammatical analysis, well, I could go into it (Finally, a use for my up until now useless English degree) But alas, I have no time to write a lengthy dissertation on the psychological and linguistic ramifications of minor blogs. Because...

Hope the previous four words were short enough paragraphs for you. Sorry, I don't spend a huge amount of time on blogs (see aforementioned "life") and therefore haven't learned to post in the truncated paragraphical style required. Anyway, enjoy your little obsession as much as you want - but in future, leave me out of it!
