She Wants Revenge-Tear You Apart
I have no idea how Johnny cash keeps getting these videos- was that not confusing- the subtitles did not work with the strong lyrics- the beginning was really exciting- then it got lame- who else wrote on this???- did shawn kim shoot this as well? info antvillle?
Im saying the same thing warhero... a big name doesnt mean good video. I hope these bands will start getting a clue...
welll after watching it i actuallly kind of like it. kind of.
I know he pulled massive favors for the ringside video but I feel his ideas are too much for short form ( no bad thing mind ) however if I was in a band from LA- the idea of having Johnny cash directing my video would be cool..however I would love to see the stuff that was rejected from non "Oscar nominated" people...
I can show u my treatment for people in planes...
great cinematography, good casting. Kind of a dumb premise - anyone else assume "Reds" in a non-modern setting would equal Communists?
Still - it's much better than the last one. I think directors will start freaking out if/when more actors follow suit (the way celebrities took over the markets for children's book and animated film voiceovers).
I saw this band live tonight, opening for the excellent electric six. They're just too boring--new order-ish ripoffs. The video is kind of dull in a preachy-no concept-but-lets-make-a-statement-anyway kind of way.
I cant believe the band saves her in the end - lame - I think Jonny Cash has promise, be has to get past the whole, "climax of the video equals adding gels to lights" concepts, you know what I mean.
Stop guzzling the haterade. This video was terrific. I hate this band but didn't at any point feel compelled to skip forward or stop watching. I prefer this sinister take on what Chris Grismer did in Stars "Ageless Beauty" video. He's working with great DPs but there's still a terrific visual sense to his now 3 videos. His coverage of the drive to the dance was beautifully done. The actors are believable, which rarely happens in a video.
As I said in a previous Phoenix post, I am totally decided that he could direct a feature better than 99% of all video directors. It feels to me that his weakness as a video director is his reliance on narrative - managing to fit it into a video, which I didn't feel happens so well in the People in Planes video. Using subtitles throughout a piece worked well in this, but I have a feeling most people get annoyed by it. I pictured it unfolding in my head without subtitles and it could've worked.
All that said, the thought of some high school girl going off with those dudes is the creepiest thing in there.
i'm with you, shut - that ending is preposterous. i thought the track wasn't half-bad (though the profanity is just gratuitous - and even more ridiculous when it gets silenced out), and the whole atmosphere, including subtitles worked really well.
but: what's johnny cash got to do with this? someone pls explain. (and: what was his "previous video"?)
oh, duh - ok, got it.
to clarify for future readers: dir. Joaquin Phoenix
totally agree- Mr cash should just go and do a feature- it will be amazing...videos- he got too many ideas.
I think everyone is giving it way too much credit. The DP work is what pushes it above really, really bad. I think he has potential to become a good director, just as long as he doesn't write the script.
The song, on the other hand, is mind-numbingly awful. This monotone, carnival barker/bored radio traffic reporter music needs to stop.
I cant believe how hard everyone is being on this video...I think it's quite good despite the obvious fact that it should just be a short and doesn't really transcend the music in any way, and they likely had quite a big budget, but otherwise, it kept me watching til the end, with good acting and pretty shots which is still better than most videos put out.
I don't think anyone is being overly hard on this video. It just isn't that good; the concept is contrived and boring, the ending is trite, and the band is terrible. Redeeming features? The girl is cute. The literal "reds" thing was bad. I was hoping for a real cold-war video.
i agree, i think everything about this video is terrible. the idea the execution. i even laughed at the end because it was so bad it made me uncomfortable. it was completely a completely unoriginal tired idea. outcast person who is alienated finds friendship and acceptance with freaks. blah
I'm with Otaku...mouths are parched from hating on this one. Everyone and their uncle wrote on this, and at the end of the day, this is a concept that could have still been picked with another non-actor director. But....but...its cheesy.. blah fucking blah kids. This is a band founded by two LA scenester DJs who realized Interpol was getting so laid that Carlos D was about to have a new kind of herpes names after him. They wanted in, they're getting it. As we speak presumably.
This video is perfect for their fan base (READ: young girls, malls kids, faux goths, MCR fans who just got into Joy Division etc.), and well shot and executed especially for a newbie director. Videos are supposed to match songs, and cater to the band's fanbase. You see, thats why labels pay for them.
And by the way, these guys are on Durst's label, he could have fucking directed this video so lets at least be thankful that didn't happen.
Just because it's good for their fanbase doesn't mean it's a good video -- that shouldn't ever be an excuse.
It might have been all right if it weren't the two awkward-looking guys from the band who saved the girl at the end. Still, this is some pretty ham-handed stuff. I'm still waiting for these guys to come out and say "It's all a joke, people! We're a parody band!"
Yeah but guys, that shot of the ear, when he wants to tell her something - the slow push into the ear - is really tremendous.
I disagree with all this feature talk. At best he'd be able to do another junky teenage genre thing. Like he'd be the guy to remake carpener's THE FOG.
I'd also bet a good dollar shawn shot this. They got along really well on the ringside piece.
i felt super clausterphobic watching this, the subtitles and the loud anntention demanding voice seemed to compete for the spotlight, the spot where they sync up, when they kiss, the visuals, the narration and the song all line up and it works.. you know and ussualy thats to litteral, but in this scenario it was the only part i was totaly on.. also all the darkness... seems to work against any "feel" or sense of story.
I like it!
My mistake... Sorry... it just confused the hell out of me
hellbound: See this
hehe z'alright
