presidentofvice, July 8, 2006 at 12:25:16 AM CEST

I liked it. not groundbreaking, but fun. enjoyed this more than rubber johnny to be honest. i think the fact that this was directed by cunningham (and the fact that it's his first music video in a really, really long time) just puts the expectation too high. not one for the history books, just a simple whacked out performance vid done well...

nofare, July 8, 2006 at 12:47:35 AM CEST

I think it's perfect. Short, cheap and sweet. Perfect performance from the Horrors and Morton (hers is actually very very reminiscent of the performance Isabelle Adjani gave in the staggering film "Possession" by Zulawski.) Nice.

quixoticnyc, July 8, 2006 at 12:49:44 AM CEST

If there is any way to get it reposted in QT I 2nd that it would soooooooooooo appreciated thnx gang

lusk81, July 8, 2006 at 6:47:53 AM CEST

I don't understand why he would even waste his time anymore with promos. This biological/parasite/intestines bursting out of body kick he's been on is pure b horror movie. Right in line with cronenberg and carpenter.

progosk, July 8, 2006 at 7:58:07 AM CEST

try this direct link in windotz media playr. should save you the registration crap.

framescourer, July 8, 2006 at 11:15:53 AM CEST

Being as I am a proven authority on the work of Chris Cunningham (for it is he this time, verily) I know you'll be interested to hear that I consider this a fucking good music video.

quixoticnyc, July 8, 2006 at 2:23:55 PM CEST

Im a bit confused for a few reasons. One the link doesnt seem to work at all. Anyone else having this issue.

I'm perplexed by Lusk comment. " don't understand why he would even waste his time anymore with promos. This biological/parasite/intestines bursting out of body kick he's been on is pure b horror movie. Right in line with cronenberg and carpenter"

So guy doesn't do a clip for 7 or 8 yrs and now you are suggesting he shouldnt bother at all. Then you go on about his "creative kick" that he's on and in the same breath manage to take out Cronenberg and Carpenter as being less than credible directors. Like their work or not both of the above directors happen to be 2 of the very few people who have managed to break through the confines of conventional filmmaking and do it their way. Which reminds me very much of Cunningham. That said it sounds as if he owes you more and as if because hes done great promo work in the past there is nothing else to be achieved in that format? ?? Lastly, I claim to be no expert but I do know that Cunninghams early career begai in FX makeup involved with projects like Hellraiser, Alien3 etc. So should it be so surprising that he has an interest in makeup and horror??? Is that not ok or creative?

lusk81, July 8, 2006 at 2:55:04 PM CEST

QUIX: You're reading my comment(s) incorrectly. I consider Carpenter truly tremendous. DARK STAR is one of the most entertaining debuts and THE THING is easily the best remake of all time -- and a downright tremendous movie. Cronenberg is able to supply an audience with images we've never seen before. His obsession with "the horror within" is not only original and fresh, but is an utterly charged and exciting approach to two very stale genres, horror and sci fi. But please note: both directors do make b movies (which isn't a bad thing), and both are clearly big influences on mr. cunningham.

As for CC, doesn't it feel like he's really outgrown promos? I just don't believe he belongs in this world anymore and am curious as to why he hasn't taken his work to a bigger level (features)...

And if features are dead to him, why not go utterly into the experimental or art world? Talk about boundless......

As for his "kick", this one is very clearly an extension of the work done on rubber johnny and an evolution of his makeup effects work from the past.

He clearly has his own path, but he's already crushed the competition/industry. I just don't know why he would want to stay in the same place. Eventually people are just gonna consider his pieces 'played out' or 'uninteresting' (please read above comments). Why do the same dance at the same party year after year?

And yes, I do believe promos have hit a certain wall. There is absolutely a ceiling to this genre (in form, purpose, message, distribution, and audience). Saying that one can really grow and continually innovate feels a little naive.

That's like hearing a commercial director say his work is "very personal".

benroll, July 8, 2006 at 3:10:46 PM CEST

This is a good video. I love the shots of the drummer and guitarist. It's well executed and presumably on a small budget.

If it doesn't live up to eight years of anticipation, that's mainly our problem.

What it lacks for me is enough of the quirk, black humour and irreverence that I think characterises his best work. This seems like pure Cunningham, but working well inside his creative comfort zone. How much better would it have been to see something utterly unexpected: a complete new direction perhaps, after so long?

c-dub, July 8, 2006 at 5:25:37 PM CEST

yeah, sux. link doesnt werk....

jva, July 8, 2006 at 5:36:41 PM CEST

lusk- glad you clarified and i mostly agree. twould be a far far better world if CC were directing one killer body horror flic every other year or so. it's hard to fathom how/why he's not.

but the fact of promos hitting a wall w/r/t distro and visibility (not to mention the board's white elephant- the disappearance of music videos from nominally music channels) doesn't necessarily affect what can be done with them. the market was limited and apparently ossified when CC and gondry began blowing all our minds. who could have expected that?

not that i can watch this. but man, i don't even want to watch this, i just wanted the EMAIL UPDATES on select UNIVERSAL ARTISTS. please oh please.

black_dust, July 9, 2006 at 1:13:00 AM CEST

Hmmm the guys having problems with the link have you tried the direct link posted above by progosk? or even going onto the horrors myspace blog, i have converted it to QT but the dam things way to big and i dont want to compress it anymore or the qulity will be crap.

Sorry, wish I were at my computer so I could keep heads up on this, but I'm out of the office for the moment..

Grr!

hassinator, July 10, 2006 at 4:56:52 PM CEST

Jeez you guys are hard to please.

He is making a video for a track he likes on a budget that may not allow him create an all singing all dancing triumph like All Is Full Of Love.

Its still fucking good though.

concentrated evil, July 10, 2006 at 5:15:41 PM CEST

it's alright. no corks have been popped in my world thats for sure.

bugle, July 10, 2006 at 5:39:12 PM CEST

song is okay.

video is a whatever sandwich with some calamari on top. somebody should turn on the lights and tell these people they look ridiculous. they should take samantha morton aside and show her still frames of how retarded she looks, and then she should file a restraining order against myspace. then they should point the camera at cunningham and tell him that he's making shitty college films based on his own music videos, and that the hip drugs he does with harmony korine have given his career all the depth of a jello shot.

crash zoom into his reaction. cue aphex twin. roll credits.

fuckyamanmelovevideosezzzz, July 10, 2006 at 8:31:24 PM CEST

toddyokoh, July 10, 2006 at 10:54:28 PM CEST

Well, I like it. Simple, precise, nice touches with what looks like painted eyelids. I am a big fan of short, cheap music videos done well. This is one of those. Surely not one fore the books, but great fun.

quixoticnyc, July 11, 2006 at 2:34:17 AM CEST

Hassinator... thank you...you are dead on. The attitude that directors owe viewers something just makes no sense to me.

mricc, July 11, 2006 at 3:22:17 AM CEST

love it!

"I do believe promos have hit a certain wall. There is absolutely a ceiling to this genre"

I disagree, there are a millions of ways to make music videos (just like movies) and if labels & bands would take chances on the "outside the box" ideas that they claim to want, we would see more and more new and groundbreaking stuff.

don't give up!

someguy, July 11, 2006 at 10:21:36 AM CEST

A little gem..Love it too mricc. Take your heads out of your asses chumps this video is sic. Ok so its awesomeness wont give you a nose bleed but its still pretty interesting, diverting, etc,etc...theres a lot of right going on here...and it simplicity..fuck people maybe you saw a different video

scooper, July 11, 2006 at 12:02:45 PM CEST

If anyone else had made this I bet the majority of antvillers would have loved its originality as a performance video. As it is you seem to have to judge it because of his other work. This was a tiny budget (I know the production manager) so let it go. If you can do better with the same money, prove it! I want to see videos from all the regular antville officionados up online. Go on post your work so we can all comment. Dare you, or are you worried people may diss it like you diss their work. C'mon be brave now...

fuckantvillelocals, July 11, 2006 at 10:11:52 PM CEST

Two days later..... I like it even more!!! Fuck Antville locals.. You couldn't 'direct' your way out of a paper bag.....

hakai, July 12, 2006 at 6:45:54 AM CEST

i love it too. its pretty solid. simple solid frame by frame ish... fuckers good.

speacocke, July 12, 2006 at 7:43:32 AM CEST

This is a very good music video! That is a fact. I wonder who the editor was, I assume it was Chris as the cut responds seamlessly to the music as if each and every shot has been specifically planned. And the overall feel echoes the misogynistic emotions that parasitic women induce...

speacocke, July 12, 2006 at 7:47:10 AM CEST

KEVATHENS We should add a feature to Antville where members who have featured work on Antville have a little link to a directory of their work. I would love to find out who makes what...

progosk, July 12, 2006 at 8:13:33 AM CEST

no way to automate that on here, speack - videoville to the rescue: all willing & identified antvilleans can get/complete their individual entries. site&nick-specific googling can come in handy. (for personal quick reference, any user can always check her own posts.)

hakai, July 12, 2006 at 11:52:45 AM CEST

TO BE HONEST I WISH EVERYONE POSTED THEIR IDENTITY... I CALL THEM INTERNET BULLIES... FAKE ASS MUTHA FOOKERS WHO THROW ORANGES AND DUCK BEHIND BRICK WALLS... CHILDISH... YOU KNOW WHO I AM... THAT WAY I STAY POLITE... THIS IS A GREAT VIDEO!

remind me never to come on antville after ive been out drinking...

speacocke, July 12, 2006 at 12:25:00 PM CEST

thanks progosk :)

quixoticnyc, July 12, 2006 at 4:43:51 PM CEST

I do agree that this video is absolutely wonderful. It completely stands out on its on. Has anyone here every seen anything quite like it? I use this video as case in point that music videos arent a dead format. I truly have never seen a performance video quite so chilling. Its about whose in the driver seat and what kind of car they have. And if anyone is interested in analyzing just how much work went into this piece, I recommend watching the video frame by frame.

In terms of the posters identity thing I think if nothing else, people's emails should be linked from their name. It would be a good way to atleast have some sort of identity. It would allow a person to write someone directly if they care to, rather than post in front of the world. If there is no moderator, anyone post comments and upload, and have no identity as well, we aren't really making the community quite as mature as it can be. Just my view.

kevathens, July 12, 2006 at 8:10:02 PM CEST

Wow, lots of writing about this vid.

I'm tired, and I'll work on this whole mess later, but I thought it was a really great performance vid. (no dis to the performance vid genre)

spit, July 12, 2006 at 8:33:11 PM CEST

To be honest, I think anonymity is key to this site, as it allows directors to comment on a video truthfully without having to worry about the professional implications. That said, I think we should also remember to take every post on here with a grain of salt. Just because a video gets a few bad antville comments doesn't mean it should be regarded as crap. It mostly means that a few frustrated grad students didn't find it compelling. I had a strange request a few months ago where an experienced and respectable director asked me to post a few good comments on his video over here because he felt like it was getting slammed pretty harshly. Maybe we just need to remember that this place serves a really specific and homogenous demographic that respects an extremely particular style of work. If people don't like something on antville, chances are that their opinions are not entirely the best-informed in the industry, the culture, or the media at large, and we need to remember that fact before giving this site and its mass "opinion" to much credence.

kevathens, July 12, 2006 at 8:46:49 PM CEST

scooper: Do you know who DP'd, edited, or otherwise worked on this?

I watched it a few more times, and it's an awesome vid. Be careful not to put too much pressure on a vid, that usually kills it.

hakai, July 12, 2006 at 9:57:36 PM CEST

Nah man you should be able to say what you want and say who you are without the fear. Be a brave internet warrior.

black_dust, July 12, 2006 at 10:01:17 PM CEST

Hey guys Chris talks about this video in this months Dazed and confused magazine note on it says "Legendary video director Chris Cunningham talks exclusively about his first music video in six years, for East-end organ grinders The Horrors' 'Sheena Is A Parasite'."

quixoticnyc, July 12, 2006 at 10:42:48 PM CEST

Spit I think your perspective is probably a very good one. Your point about the taking it all with a grain of salt is very accurate. Also your point about the homogenous perspective of say 5-40 posters as compared to the god knows how many are watching here is dead on. I guess my perspective is more related to the success of other blogs I've seen.

I happen to read alot of great design sites and the glue seems to be either a moderator or some sense of responsibilty for your input. I think otherwise it makes it so easy for someone to just post "it sucked" or "its amazing." Again just my opinion, but either way I happen to truly appreciate antville as a wonderful resource. And I must add again this is a groundbreaking video just for how completely fucking odd it is alone!

nodirection, July 13, 2006 at 12:48:26 AM CEST

I think it's beautiful. the imagery is very nicely done. i'm not a huge horror fan because it isn't shot with asthetics in mind. it just shows gore and guts. but this has depth and very refreshing editing, pieced together to create a new kind of scary. a more believable one, like in dreams.

kevathens, July 13, 2006 at 2:17:54 AM CEST

Sheena's page has been updated with all the info I found/received as of today. I've pre-ordered it, already (thank God). More news coming down the pike.. Thanks to everyone for helping with this!!

Great vid, don't front, fools.
