Does Switchfoot know it signed up for a Verizon commercial?the commish, 13. July 2006, 17:39
I can't figure out why this is so watchable...but it is. I guess it is just fun to watch a music video that is self aware but doesn't take itself too seriously.eyeraw, 13. July 2006, 18:56
Wicked, very well done.But I can't resist... oops... :)

That's fine. I'm sure jake Scott nicked it from someone else. This type of thing has been done since Dziga Vertov in the teens and 20s, and most likely before him. If I remember from my film theory days, the definitive aspect of abstract film is cutting between two unrelated, but similarly shaped images. To my knowledge, abstract film making has been around a while. I sorta agree with the Verizon commercial criticism, but who cares? I like the way commercials look. They're the sugar coating that agencies use to force products down our throats. So, as far as sugar goes, this was sweet indeed. Between this and his Fatboy work, Jon Watts is quickly becoming my new favorite director.

Judging by Switchfoot's previous stuff, I'm sure the label wanted the "verizon commercial look" for this spot. And c'mon, do we have to call a dude out every time a really well done video just happens to use a common film-making technique? A blatant rip-off of a video treatment is is one thing, but this guy used a classic editing idea in a really fresh way.fungible, 14. July 2006, 00:02
Fantastic. Well thought-out and executed. Just wish it was a better song...ford, 14. July 2006, 09:48
i helped out on this video.i'm glad you guys like it because - DAMN - it was hard to make.
this matchcut shit is a serious pain in the ass.
progosk, 14. July 2006, 10:15
how was it: you shot band first, then set-ups to match their spontaneous moves? or were all the matches pre-planned with respect to the band's performance?incidentally, i think a good number of your matches are better than in that nike thing.

DAS IST GUTT!ford, 14. July 2006, 23:57
we planned out all the match cuts with storyboards. shot the band with certain moves in mind to match to our cast of wacky characters.and hey - coming up we got ben doing a the raptures video and jon's doing TV on the Radio today.
