The Horrors 'Count in Fives', Dir: Daniel Wolfe
I know this has been posted before but it was linked to a shitty, shitty youtube version. Here it is in all it's low fi glory; www.partizan.com
OK, I know that The Horrors have some buzz going right now, (most of which comes from a few NME articles and a Chris Cunningham video), and I know we all like lo-fi videos, but was this worth posting twice? I mean, it seems to fail on all fronts. I'd be willing to wager that the only noteworthy thing about the video - awkward green screen dance interpretation/ sign language demo - came about as a result of the original treatment - band plays in room covered in tin foil - not working out very well. Creative save, but I'm not sure if this qualifies as a 'cool music video.'
That being said, I don't mean to be rude, or call out the director, just trying to make sense of this piece.
Don't like being negaive...but MAN that was a horrible song and video...I feel tainted.
i would rather K-Fed "Lose Control. youtube.com
horrible song, horrible haircuts, horrible outfits...oh dear...
The Arctic Monkeys and Art Brut are basically the same thing, right? Appealing to kids on different sides of the cafeteria. I'd think this just normal competent pop music (with wholly appropriate visual style), except the intense negative reaction suggests they might actually be on to something.
najork seems to be the only person who gets it.
I can't really fathom the antville poster demographic when fey Dougal Wilson videos are heaped with praise, the plethora of identikit 'shot on an empty stage' videos are discussed with merit and something like this video, which attempts to show two fingers to all that is poo-pooed.
Of course the tin foil is a horrible aesthetic, of course the edit is unpleasantly rapid, of course the band's styling looks horrific to you all. You're cappuccino drinking, Evisu clad smug-wads barely clinging to your 'late twenties' and who work in the media.
And as for the signing, have any of you actually watched it? Quite apart from being 'tacked on at the end' - like a performance video of that intensity needs anything 'tacked on at the end' - it makes for endless repeat viewing. Something the potential audience for this video are heavily geared towards; unlike the 'glance', 'sneer', 'and move on' attitude illustrated on here.
Admittedly I didn't watch it fully before. This Internet thing promotes passing glances so easily..
Actually, I sat down and watched it fully: the song is great. The edit and camerawork are actually pretty damn good, it's those damn people out front that I think are throwing myself and a lot of others off. When you just concentrate on the video, those people are actually quite humorous.
Indeed, a great performance video. Thanks for the ribbing. I've never had a cup of coffee in my life, though.
Yes K-K, I agree about the signing. One can watch one signer for the whole video...the interpretation of this music as a physical language and as a way for deaf viewers (yes they are out there, 7million deaf/hard of hearing in uk) to understand what the music is about strikes me as an original and intriuging idea.
