Controversy
Are videos just black or white?
For my opinion click here. 30frames.
while it is probably safe to say that most black directors are shooting rap/R&B videos; the fact that a good chunk of big budgets is for rap/R&B videos means that a lot of the directors are white.
And where does Joseph Kahn and Patrick Daughters fit into this?

What does this mean? "the fact that a good chunk of big budgets is for rap/R&B videos means that a lot of the directors are white."
I don't follow your point. I don't think that the majority (or even a significant minority) of rap video directors are white or non-black. Maybe you have a point here, I just don't get it.
Does Patrick D even do hip-hop stuff? I think of him as doing Beck, Secret Machines and Kings of Leon type jobs.
Joseph is certainly an exception, as is Klasfeld - but less so in 2006. Even a few years there was more cross-over with white directors doing street artists. That has fallen off significantly. Maybe Gil Green is the biggest exception.
Well based on the fact that blacks make up 10% of the US; I think it would be safe to say they make up probably 10% of directors. Not more than 20%.
But rap & R&B EASILY make up 40-50% of BIG ($300K+) budgets.
And for examples; I feel like I know of a lot of white guys who make generic rap & R&B videos, like Ray Kay, Ethan Lader... there's a lot of others. They're just off the radar cause their work is very, well, generic.
And Joseph Kahn and Patrick Daughters are both Asian. So, you know, neither black or white.
Well Kahn and Daughters are pretty much irrelevant for post I made. Kahn does lots of pop and some R&B videos. I sort of excluded glossy R&B from my point, if you recall. Has Daughters done many (any?) urban videos I am unaware of?
Ray Kay is a good cross-over guy. He's in the low budge category with Gil. Not sure I even know who Ethan Lader is.
Asian directors fall into the "white" category which means essentially "not black." Jesse Terrero is Latin and I would put him into the "black" category of urban approved guys while Jake Nava (another Latin bloke) is more of the R&B type. Don't ask me about octaroons, this is getting too technical.
