lovely video, but why was it encoded with a redudant letterbox and alpha channel?captainbob, December 21, 2006 6:56:34 AM CET
I think he blew any of the cool handmade crafty aspect with some really cheesy and obvious compositing. if this was a school project i'd be impressed...but maybe it's just that i never seem to like his videos...ford, December 21, 2006 7:17:19 AM CET
yeah i did something like that 10 years ago in my high school photography class.boey, December 21, 2006 8:04:21 AM CET
Some neat stuff in the video..but overall it doesn't work. Could have spent a little more time to get to know each space. Also far to many Gondry 'homages'.captainmarc22, December 21, 2006 12:09:14 PM CET
it's a tragedy how awful the compositing is.dek, December 21, 2006 4:47:50 PM CET
> it's a tragedy how awful the compositing is.We're probably just missing who have been ripped off this time...

Yeah the main problem is the compositing. Also the transitions where they use the pan & scan technique look awkward and make the video look cheaper than it probably was. I love the art direction though. Some funny jokes, like the audience in its underwear.I think one of the problems with the faux on e-taker is that you instantly recognize that it's fake and so it has to try twice as hard to keep your attention. I usually get fed up with them pretty quickly, that was the problem i had with that Concretes video videos.antville.org. So far the best faux one-take I've seen was this one videos.antville.org because it plays around with the technique a little.
The other main problem with this video is that it would be a great video for a twee indie-rock band but it doesn't seem slick enough for Norah Jones' VH1 audience. I would imagine the record label probably isn't thrilled with it.

I'm sorry: I like it.(dont be too quick in finding things too gondryesk ...)
bunjmaster, December 22, 2006 6:31:31 AM CET
the production designer is jeff everett who also did "dance, dance" and "the denial twist" which could explain some of the homebrewey gondry feel of the video. Although, I really dig the heck out of it despite all the antville haters.fungible, December 22, 2006 7:12:48 AM CET
the cheesy compositing is what makes it charming. not everything has to be frickin' lord of the rings, you know.gwan, December 22, 2006 7:23:54 AM CET
theres RC, Pepsi, Coke and some fancy organic ones and some cheap ones (quarter cola), in a blind taste test you might be able to taste coke, but no way on the other ones... amd thats how i feel about this video. this video actuly exploits Two of my pet peves A). exposed card board (unless it passes through three portals of visual irony and is unconcious of it.) and B). BLack and blue crazy shaped wild city perspective building (with the exception of T.B in TNB12/15)
Neckface: how to pretemd you have less dexterity thatn you really have.-not related
Heres the treatment:
ON the train i think about you wanting me to think about me thinking of you think about us, but were both alone.

if the vid had been shot like the last scene: guy walks through door into train - then it would have gelled more - physical transitions from one scene to the next. I agree, comping seemed to cheapen it and although not everything has to be lord of the rings, if you are going to throw a load of cash at a project, then you have to see it through, no? A video that didn't know what it wanted to be perhaps.jonwatts, December 24, 2006 2:02:40 AM CET
Man... this guy ace has been ripping me off. He copied my video for the thrills with his video for some stupid french band. His teddy bears video is total rip off of my jason forest video. I do stop motion, then he does stop motion. I do a death cab for cutie video then he does a death cab for cutie video, etc, etc, Ace, if you are reading this.. you better sleep with one eye open.otc, December 24, 2006 3:41:44 PM CET
Damn, called to the mat. I've got to admit that those four videos are ridiculously similar. Nice job on jason forest btw. Which one is he supposed to be ripping off here? So far as I can tell, he's mostly ripping off himself because he just did practically this exact same concept for a Peter Walker video. It must have been boring making the same idea twice in a row.
Actually i like the Peter Walker video more than this one.

Who is fake jonwatts? So strange. I feel like I should be sleeping with one eye open, too.iluvmmj23, January 12, 2007 10:15:13 PM CET
somebody on the obtusity comments section pointed out two gondry videos that have really similar images, like this radiohead "knives out" one which has a huge plastic heart and the trains, plus bjork's "bachelorette" which has the story within a story thing and the audience, and also features trains. it might just be a coincidence, but kind of interesting.crymercy, January 13, 2007 10:24:09 AM CET
interesting? i guess artists never repeat themselves for any reason whatsoever. this comment is dumb. go back to your dayjob.iluvmmj23, January 14, 2007 2:27:30 AM CET
i wasn't criticizing gondry for repeating images, i was just pointing out that norton might be borrowing from gondry directly rather than indirectly since this norah jones vid features both a similar heart and train imagery, sorry if my previous post wasn't very clear.crymercy, January 14, 2007 3:17:43 AM CET
no you're not clear. you write poorly.
