Right.
he's really taking his peculiar brand of hagiography to heady levels of mannerism. makes me think of pontormo. do these (with their characteristic juxtapositions) register as commentary/critique to anyone besides me?
prog, wasnt familiar with Pontormo, checked out some of the work. I dont see the similarity. I just think Gourley really knows how to utilize the frame. Klasfeld did people staring at camera at what looked like 30fps, sort of ghetto Americana. But Klasfelds framing usually had the subjects on the same plane, or one subject up front and to the left, with people slightly behind. I always thought it was striking imagery. I think Gouley does this but on another level, sort of a three point framing. I think sometimes its to make a social commentary as in the Rich Boy "Cadillac" video, and other times its just a more artistic way to give someone a cameo....
totally farfetched, of course, but: to do with his intense sense of colour & composition, taking the tricks of a "maniera" to certain esthetic (but also moral) extremes. (in a way that michelangelo didn't.)
pretty boring, isnt it?
