Calvin Harris 'The Girls' Dir: Kim Gehrig

chillibean.net

A brilliantly original and wonderfully executed dance video for Calvins second single by Kim Gehrig.

Another video with a bad performance by the artist. The video is well made. The cutting fits and the girls move well. The reference is obvious. But dang, what is up with these artists not giving it their all? I hate putting up with that.

Question: when the artist's performance is so uninspired and bland, who is to blame? Of course the director, in any given situation, has the job to try and pull a performance out of the actor/artist, but with the tight schedule, it seems that the artists needs to bring a lot more right off the bat.

In this case, the director did a nice job of capturing the sundry movement but seemingly did not inspire the artist quite enough.

sometimes simplicity is just the tonic...

i love this, although the aesthetic is shamelessly ripped-off from french artist Katerine

... and Vanessa Beecroft.

Video is a rip-off, but the track is sooo much better than that "Acceptable in the 80s" crap... although it is an uncomfortably close parallel to Daft Punk, CSS, etc.

"Question: when the artist's performance is so uninspired and bland, who is to blame? Of course the director" Sure, if you've got an inspired and interesting artist.

I dont think that applies here...

Ehh? don't understand. what the guy was supposed to do, start thrusting his hips around and doing flash dance. if your going to sing a song about how great you are with the ladies, you might as well feign disinterest and lounge about with a slightly retarded look on your face, loving yourself. How else are the girls going to know what a rock god you are. Think this video gets it spot on and the performance is exactly how it was intended. Don't know about the rip off on the idea bit, i can see that they look very similar, but "sexy girls in blond bob wigs and catsuits dancing and thrusting to the music" sounds like one of those ideas thats just going to occur over and over, like the shellsuit being invented simultaneously in the west and the former Soviet Union.

Brilliant video, the look is fresh, calvin looks hot, banging track, great idea, I'd like to see the critics do better.

generally love the idea, don't think it has been done well enough though. Think it could have worked a lot better without Calvin. He spoils the simplicity. The quality of the lighting is questionable.

costumes, camera, light is great work. I dont mind rip offs if you use it as an inspiration and do it different, better sometimes. to me here the choreographie is just boring.

Made me think of Vanessa Beecroft too, however; I don't think its a "rip off". Seems like a very obvious tip of the hat to me. Though the video went rather nicely to a song I would be otherwise uninterested in.
