New Smashing Pumpkins Video - "Tarantula"
it's aiight... actually, it's really not. it's stupid
Directed by P.R. Brown. Shot in Atlanta during the week of 6/18. Partially in 3D. Get your glasses out.
at first i was like, "what the hell is this? I dont even know what the treatment could be for this. How did this get made?"
and then I realized. It probably looked something like this "Use a lot of really old style effects like those sweet earth wind and fire videos. smashing pumpkins are a classic band coming back, and this video will make them look like an old band with an old video, and not some new hip video like the kids are having these days."
But in the end it is just a terrible green screen video that looks like somebody's entry for a free modest mouse video contest or something. But the point is I bet he's good at writing.
Why all the models?
why, why??
the smashing pumpkins were one of the all-time great video bands. "Today," "1979", "Tonight Tonight" were all classics; many others were really good.
I know budgets are tight and times are tough but SURELY there's some young director who came of age in the 90s and would love to do a classic SP video.
It just looks like shit. Videos resembling 70s music videos have been done before, and much better- like this one.
But first and foremost, SP aren't a performance video band. And if they are, there HAS to be something cool - like this Jonas Ackerland clip.
wack. Hard to watch.
I never knew Billy Corrigan was in the KKK?!? Kinda makes sense now that I think about it.
P.R. Brown is the worst video director doing mainstream work today.
ugly.
shit director meets shit band that had a few good tracks. but why is it that suddenly people discover SP are not that great. poor voice, showmanship and lyrics from lead singer who thinks he's god: that has got to become old at some point, no?
awful, old fashioned and dull, the song and the video. not sure it's fair, constructive or clever to call someone 'shit'. I would say this was as badly commissioned as it was directed.
shocking, i couldnt watch more than 30seconds, makes me realise everyone has after effects these days.
I think the video's cool. The band's corseted performance is a double-edged sword though: it helps promote the retro video effects and the dynamic editing but next to this the band themselves look a bit bored
I think it's good because all the industry types and critics will hate it. The average viewer will not care what the treatment is about or if it's green screen, and will only watch it if they're in to the Pumpkins anyway.
Disposable, promotional, like all the rest of 'em. P.R. Brown, bravo... bravo...
The dude in the white Dracula cape is my favourite. Could use a few more layers and an extra pass through Magic Bullet suite. :D -j
