Related: MTV's Desperate VMAs (that first line is false, btw) And: Mission: Revolutionize the Awards Show
I hope Kanye doesn't try to steal Justice's award again.
..and Lily Allen and Peter Bjorn and John? I looked and found out "Alfie," "LDN," and "Young Folks" got added to mtvU, but not MTV2 or MTV. Not a bad nomination but kinda weird.
I'm glad they are focusing on the artists and not the videos themselves. Phew! I don't think that there are enough award ceremonies that centre around the artists.
I think its only right at an awards ceremony that is called the 'Video Music Awards' that the artist (the primary visionary behind a video) is championed above all others.
It's also only right that editing and choreography get an award, but not photography or art direction.
I'm glad to see MTV embrace the business side with this 'Quadruple threat' thing. That's smart because music is more about money than art I suppose, lol.
...As for the 'playing fewer vids' part, that's partially true, but I've watched over the last year and they've actually added a wider variety of vids - and probably a greater number too - to mainstream MTV's playlists than in the previous year. "D.A.N.C.E." has only received scant airplay, though, although it was shown on TRL at least once. TRL may now be on at 1pm, but whatever.
Also: Today's MTV2 schedule has 12.5 hours of videos.
And to complete the maximalist version of this, here are the newly-deceased categories..
- Best Rap Video
- Best R&B Video
- Best Hip-Hop Video
- Best Dance Video
- Best Rock Video
- Best Pop Video
- Viewer's Choice (??)
- Ringtone of the Year
- Best Video Game Soundtrack
- Best Video Game Score
- Best Special Effects
- Best Art Direction
- Best Cinematography
- MTV Video Vanguard Award (??)
Okay have a nice day.
Finally the folks at viacom got it right. MTV has been a shit sandwich for no less than the last 12 yrs; now they've gone completely honest with these categories. I wonder how many monkeys it took to come up with these category titles " Monster Single of the Year???????? WTF
i just love the fact that none of the links are working properly on the mtv site. wicked. good work dickwads.
it's nice to see justice on the best video of the year nominees it's sad that the ringtone of the year was removed... just kidding! hehe
Here's Kanye's reaction to D.A.N.C.E. in case you missed it.. (via subt blog)
I Am outraged that MTV would eliminate the catagories of Art Direction , Cinematography , Special Effects , Costume Design. I Belive That the show has lost all it's substance and is a mere Celebfest not a true award show . The MTV VMA's are no longer a legitimate tribute to the efforts of the contributors to the production of music videos. Please join me and others in Las Vegas as we sulute the forgotton catagories, and voice our protest.
"I'm a human being, goddammit! My life has value!" "I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!!"
