The Softlightes - "Microwave" Dir. Kris Moyes
OOOOOH F*CK
Moyes laying down the law, laying down the f*cking law man.
wow, just wow... fantastic video!
Someone saw Labyrinth.
good call on labrynth...like his last vid used muppet type creatures...When they look back on his surely successful career, this shall be known as 'the Jim Henson Period'.
kris moyes is bonkers! brilliant.
chill out antville. just because its a low budget video with a decent track doesn't mean its amazing.
Totally agree captainhairy. It is a cute vid, but far from genius. Moyes is sooo a wannabe Gondry and extremely overrated, mostly by the drones that live on this site.

Most of Moyes work to me just seems like it is completely aimed for youtube popularity. I guess that's where the MV world is heading though, slowly merging with the viral video market. Every video's final judgement directly linked to the Youtube view counter.
This video is ok. He's taken another conceptual reference ( Labyrinth ) and expanded it into a whole video with a slight visual adjustment. Obviously low budget and well executed but it exhausted itself quickly. He did a much better job with this way of working when he heavily referenced Stefan Sagmeister in that previous Softelights video.
I still think the Presets video is his best work. As far as this video goes, it mainly made me want to get out my Labyrinth DVD and watch the real thing.
This is like a student project with good glitzery art direction.
I love Moyes, I even liked his video for Sia- but not this. I sorta want to see Moyes with a large budget, just to see what he would come up with. Right now, I don't envy the career he is developing as the low-budget director with these "crafty" ideas. It must be stiffling after awhile at the very least.
Adding to my last comment- how low budget is something like this? functioning under companies like TDB must mean he has more resources and connections to cut down costs, no?
Wow. Kris Moyes is awesome. Seems like he is really questioning what a music video is or can be. He's got guts.
"Wow. Kris Moyes is awesome. Seems like he is really questioning what a music video is or can be. He's got guts."
aha
I'm awesome too! Is the TDB writing this stuff?
You really got to hand it to him.
NAH, we be bloggin without the TDB
Yeh, well, its all subjective.
But I reckon this is a very good video. Most importantly it is just soo different.
I dont know why he gets compared to Gondry so much, apart from an art-craft type look, I really cannot see any definitive similarities between their work?
I suppose I would look at this video in context to his whole body of work thus far, incredibly elcectic, and he is pushing the limits of low budget - Any experienced lo-budg filmaker would understand, and appreciate it far more.
Jim Henson, blah blah, Labyrinth, blah blah....
It was Terry Jones who devised the speaking hands gag in Labyrinth.
Other than Daft Hands, what are some other music videos that heavily feature hands like this? just curious.
Probably not what you intended but: One - Two
There is also a recent commercial where sperm cells are represented thru hands. Geez. Who thought about that?!?
great idea, great execution. it looks beautiful, stands out from the crowd etc...
I think that 'standing out from the crowd' thing is what defines Moyes at the moment. I especially like it when he plays with bad taste or ugliness. He just seems to be very progressive.
Would like to see what he does with bigger budgets but if it is not too weird to say this... think low budgets play to his strength. He needs freedom to take risks.
Not a music video but this is clever use of hands that act: www.youtube.com
I also believe that Moyes gains a lot of praise and feedback bc he works under the umbrella of a reknowned production company. If a student work resembled any of his outings (which a lot of them do), I'm sure it would be more easily dismissed and there would be far less discussions about them.
yeah, it's sad we tend to watch just videos that have more than 5 comments.
