Madrugada - Look Away Lucifer, Dir. Andreas Nilsson
very seductive artistry going on here, really eery and atmospheric, I hope i'm not falling for it for occult reasons and its secretly a marilyn manson video dressed down and re-assimilated as art. ignoring the self censorship, feels special. 21st century kenneth anger? (and probably others?)
What's that old joke? Police want to talk to a clairvoyant on the run and are looking for a man of medium height and build.
Ahem.
Look, this video strikes me as quite art-wanky; a mixed bag of images but no thread or theory. However I've been trawling antville etc. for Nilsson's other stuff which is rather rewarding. Here's a surrealist MV for José González which I dig...
... elsewhere there's a much more appealing b&w conflagration than this Madrugada piece for Love Is All - mov, toob
What is "art-wanky"? A director, or an artist, does what he/she does. Period. Whether or not it smacks of pretentiousness is another thing. I don't think it does because it seems to fit with the dark, brashness of the song.
previous nilsson in a similar vein.
Man, I loved it. Of course, I'm a huge fan of this kind of imagery and subject matter already, but I thought Andreas created a great atmosphere and combined elements really nicely. I don't think it needed a theory, I thought the mood was solid in of itself. I particularly liked the push ins towards bodies that were almost entirely in the dark. There was a lot of details that I thought added great texture to the video. And it incorporated an actually tasteful use of some potentially lame effects like (slit scan?) warping and solarization.
I love how engaging the imagery is in its sparseness. It allows for me as a viewer to fill in all the holes with the horrible possibilities constructed by my imagination. Only thing is, aren't I going to die seven days from now after watching this?
