Christina Aguilera - "Keeps Gettin' Better" : Dir. Bryan Barber
Although very artist 'friendly' i.e. buy my album here, she looks very rediculous as a target superwoman.
This is not a new thing for pop stars, but soon it'll be completely common for all artists.
is this a target commercial?
As a form of advertising, I'd say that this is as effective as a "proper" music video for Aguilera. It's actually more cohesive than her actual mv for the song, and you have to admit, the effects look way better than any motion graphic work that's been done in mv's this year.
If given the choice, I think more directors would be interested in shooting the target ad than Aguilera's actual video. It all boils down to three big reasons:
-
Obviously, budgets that are actually big enough to support such a large production. The director gets to see their vision fulfilled, and everyone gets paid their proper rate. Amazing!
-
An ad agency is in charge instead of a record label. I know it sounds like picking the lesser of two evils but... record labels are incredibly inefficient. They rush projects, do everything last minute, and are (at the moment) way understaffed. To have any other group of people calling the shots is a good thing right now.
-
Way more exposure. Nothing is more disappointing than working really hard on a video only to see it collect dust on youtube. This ad harkens back to the days when videos were unavoidable. This ad is everywhere. Aguilera's actual MV is not.
not completely new but certainly a taste of things to come.
(budget : so very true on your #2)
I thought the video was directed by Peter Berg (The Kingdom, Friday Night Lights).
loving this trend. i don't care if music videos disappear. it's fun to have these big-budget artist tie-ins for commercials. YAY!
