music video auteurs: Hal Hartley
Despite nary a mention in keef's recent feature director playlists, Hal Hartley was one of the more interesting video auteurs. Here are three instances of his œuvre:
Everything But The Girl - The only living boy in New York
Beth Orton - Stolen Car
Yo La Tengo - From a Motel 6
As the label notes, this video was deemed unsatisfactory and replaced by David Kleiler's reshoot.
(Incidentally, these last two videos are a perfect starting point for a fascinating dive into 90's music videos as seen through the lens of cable mv show My Part Of The Thing - but that's another story...)
Thank you for posting From a motel 6. Yo la Tengo are the coolest band ever and I think this typifies why beautifully, they don't have to act cool their music does it for them. It's such a brilliantly subtle two fingers up at the industry, completely anti-charismatic. What the hell did the label replace it for?
thanks for this!
some other recent themed playlists. i'm all for more of these on the 'ville.
erm, hipgno, you mean this: josh homme & pj harvey - crawl home (else, u2b, with worse sound). good addition.
