The Killers - Spaceman (Dir. Ray Tintori)
New Ray Tintori video for The Killers.

you sit there waiting for something to happen, but nothing ever does. we're showed everything in the first minute, and the visuals fade out 10 seconds before the track's through.
what the fuck is this? way to ruin an awesome song, u asshole. i wonder what the label was thinking when all this shit was going down.
Wow that was a quick turnaround, I like the concept, kind of taking the Space Oddity idea and compacting it within a "stacked" (literally) structure but it doesn't feel finished, maybe it isn't?
$250,000
I really enjoyed the first part of this but the ending gets a bit monotonous. My main criticisms would be the haphazard editing and the ending which reveals the camera crew etc. I guess this camera reveal is another Jodoworsky 'Holy Mountain' reference which is probably a reference for the entire concept of the video. However in this case the reveal just seems to take away from the magic of the art direction rather than adding any conceptual undercurrent. Regardless I still enjoyed this video, Art direction is definitely a strong point for Tintori.
ok, so my comment was not constructive. at all. but i had the biggest problem with the costuming and art direction. it's not OK to be weird just for the sake of being weird. it's really offputting. And $250,000 for this video? lord have mercy
The costumes i'm sure took up a substantial part of the budget. I think the main thing buggin me is the edit, but maybe its one of those Lo-Fi things.
Yikes.
Uh oh. I'm sure there will be a rush on here kicking a young director for having a pop at a 250,000 video that a lot of people here would have liked to have had a pop at. Let's try and be constructive at least.
I respect the mans ambitions, the scale of the vision and the general chutzpah. It just feels like there was a lot of thought going into the styling/art department, but there seems to be a lack of confidence in the camera/photography/blocking* department. *and thus the edit.
But I'd rather see this than a studio bound performance video any day. There is a braveness to it that I admire.
For all the great art direction in this the crooked candles on the table bugged the hell out of me and made me think more broadly that this shoot slid out of the directors control... Reminds me of Girls on Film but with less of a story. The start is great, synced and unexpected and engaging with the strange bright characters and odd theatrical location but after such a fluid first shot the first edit seems almost botched. From there the video just bellyflops. Some nice crane shots towards the end against the night sky and nice costumes and all that jazz but nothing that sustained me throughout. Tintori's work usually seems built on vivid storytelling which this clip really lacks, the singers performance anchors the whole thing to the song but his character just does nothing and nothing happens... The shot at the end seems to be an afterthought just there to show off the scale of the set but adds nothing. Feels like it could be re-edited.
was going to write a paragraph or two but wing seems to have summed up my thoughts pretty well. i'd just like to add that i admire the effort and the scope. you can't really say the director didn't go 'balls to the wall' on this one.

I loved Time to Pretend but this just isn't doing it for me. It feels like a 15k MGMT video ruined by a 250k Killers budget. Tintori's style is heavily intertwined with MGMT's and it's something he's going to have to work on seperating if he's going to have success with any other acts. It'll get boring quickly if every band he directs end up looking like MGMT.
i liked the freaky costumes and atmosphere, but the vid got boring quickly.
pretty much agree with everything above.
first shots had me intrigued...
edit needs to be edited again to match the pace / get rid of those quick jarring cuts...
liked the art dept, the concept of a 3 story thing is cool... bet the treatment was badass...
last shot annoyed me.
why do we need to know that there was a film crew there? was that really worth the helicopter?
but i also agree with the ballsyness of the effort.
and want to add that i thought some of his mannerisms and movements were great. liked when he walked up the stairs and when he tapped on the table.
just could have been much more epic considering the song and the budget.
It feels like we are missing some daytime footage. After a couple viewings I like it a bit more though.
I was joking about the budget. I have no idea how much it cost.
I admire that Tintori went all out. I actually think the biggest problem is the lead singer's performance - if he was moving around like Jamiroquai imagine how much better this video would have been. I don't know if he's ever been super charismatic; but then again I don't think he's done a "solo" video like this without a rock performance to anchor him in.
well if you've ever seen the killers perform live, you know that brandon never moves around-- he stands and kind of bounces in place. i don't think it's fair to blame the artist here since the director could easily have remedied that with proper direction
boring as the song... and as the killers
cap, did you pitch on this or something? chill out, it's just a video.
what a fabulous mess
thankfully i have no association with the music video industry, but i love this song. but i will take your advice and chill out.
not 250k. significantly less. not low budget or anything, but definitely less.
a very expensive low budget video. and the edit is truly diabolical.
what the hell? i dunno maybe it'll get better the more you watch it but it seriuosly doesnt look finished. need more shots of them just playing as a band or something. why doesn't anything really happen? i say get tim burton again to direct the next one. now that was a video!
the budget was just over $200k
It feels like one of those 'hey let's throw a bunch of crazy stuff together and pray that something happens' videos. No one looks like they know what to do, especially the lead singer, and after the first 30 seconds all of the ideas are exhausted. Whoever art directed did a nice job, but it feels like no one else bothered to show up the day of the shoot. The edit and color correction can't be final, right?
Not to be too Matt Pinfield-y, but it reminds me of a weird video from like 94 or 97..
Not quite this, but definitely done by a Zappian band of weirdos who set up a giant contraption and performed in the middle of it.
Found it..
Ha, awesome Kev, the similarities are striking.
worst part about the vid is when lead singer is playing the air drums.
I think the decadence of the whole thing is all part of the enjoyment of it. I'll agree that Flowers isn't quite up to the task but who could blame him. You show up on set and get outfitted in hockey pads and tights and you have to improv a dance on a table in front of Napoleonic soldiers... At some points he doesn't seem to know whether to look at the camera or not. I definitely enjoyed myself while I was watching it though. awkward, but delightfully so.
think the decadence of it pretty much reflect what the world or the business coming to at the moment!!! and thats interesting...
good find kev,
though, I think it might be closer to this vid:
Im surprised nobody talked about...
ITS A HARD LIFE Queen
Anyone?
