tutorial: YouTube and Dailymotion Quicktime links
Though Flash has grown by leaps and bounds, with all major outlets now offering (so-called) HD playback, Quicktime .h264 is still a gold standard, both professionally and round here at the 'ville. What better, then, than a simple way to provide direct Quicktime links to the YouTube and/or Dailymotion videos you're itching to post? (Hundreds of antcast subscribers will heart you for it.) Earn 'ville benevolence points by making these a habit:
YouTube Simply take the "code" part of the youtube link, and stick it into this URL in place of the x's: youtubemp4.com In order for it to show up in the antcast, instead of embedding the video, post the direct YouTube link and the .mp4 link (plus, of course, a nice screenshot). The mp4 will automatically be the highest resolution available for that video. UPDATE: this method's currently not working (broken by new YouTube API).
Dailymotion Take the "code" part of the dailymotion link, and stick it into this URL in place of the x's: iphone.dailymotion.com This will take your browser (Firefox&Safari both work) to a page with a still image - when clicked, the m4v loads. Select "View Source" and you'll see a link with "/get/" in it - that's the one, including all the numbers and letters following the ".h264?" part. Post it as described above.
Unfortunately, Vimeo will never have direct permalinks; Myspace technique, anyone?
I use keepvid.com for youtube, it worked for just about any other video site, no more; the DownloadHelper Firefox plug-in works nicely so far.
I take it antvillers are familiar with the code to download HD youtubes? Load HD version of video, then paste in URL window this:
javascript:window.location.href%20=%20'youtube.com"&fmt=22"%20+%20"&l="%20+%20swfArgs['l']%20+%20"&sk="%20+%20swfArgs['sk']%20+%20'&t='%20+%20swfArgs['t'];
Javascript window pops-out asking to save the vid, select destination, voilá.
firefox download tools:
-
greasemonkey + "download youtube videos as mp4" userscript for youtube (only gets up to the "high quality" versions - use youtubemp4.com link for the HD ones - seems easier than 0ptical's trick)
-
greasemonkey + "dailymotion mp4 download" userscript for dailymotion (otherwise use iphone.dailymotion.com method described above)
-
for embedded quicktimes: "download embedded" and "unplug" plugins.
This code at the end of a youtube link will play it in the uploaded quality and not compressed and blocky
&fmt=18
Dont know about myspace videos. but i know how to download mp3s off myspace at the uploaded bit rate
stick the myspace user ID at the end (found in the brower addy bar when on pictures) the search for the .mp3 in the html code
black_d: &fmt=18 is "high quality"; &fmt=22 is HD (when available).
Also, Myspace has secured their servers so if you try to access the MP3s that way you get a 403:Forbidden response.
you can download the quicktime from a vimeo vid if you are logged in and if the account that uploaded the video has enabled downloading.
for VIMEO without download option -> try: clipnabber.com
luk: this gets you the flv, something you can do in safari by just looking in the activity window, and then copying and pasting into the download window. no on-the-fly mp4 conversion on the horizon, sadly...
anyone know how to nab files (.flv or otherwise) off of pitchfork.tv?
Bunny: Safari's activity window (+ download window) is your new bicycle.
@ familiar : No you dont, you must be putting it in wrong. you need the string of number after ID on the users myspace.
@ Progosk : Cheers! even better!
Hi there , ( it's my first comment ! ) to download everything ( including Vimeo ) use " Orbit " , and specially " Grab + + "(which is part of it ), it's the easiest and simpliest way Or " DownloadHelper " , if you are running on Linux . Ant'videofreaks , I love you all , I'm addicted !
I am entering it correctly. Myspace uses an XHR token/request system to secure the files, and a streaming server to send them over. If you take any of the urls from the playlist you get after "entering the user id", and drop them into your browser, you will not get the MP3.
I have no idea when they started doing this, but their media player changed recently.
