Lily Allen, "Not Fair" (dir. Melina)
easy & well done - ok, it won't change the world but hey: lily even changed pop itself.
It's like the country & western version of Sensual Seduction just not as funny
fun enough!
battle of the indie songstress country-kitsch videos: porter vs Hee-Haw
Lily gets points for execution but demerits for release date.
Strengths and weaknesses...
The 'look' of NTSC tube cameras is always fun. The C&W television show pastiche is cute. Lily's styling is a tremendous success too. Who would have thought that a P.O.R.G with an arse like a dray horse could carry off a white trouser suit? As it is the spirit of Kiki Dee is alive and well.
I just wish the whole affair was more studied. The camerawork and editing are typical pop video territory - not at all like the style of coverage one would expect on a tv show like the one they're emulating. The backing dancers are too gyratory - as is Ms Allen's choreography. Same deal with the session musicians. If everybody is in on the joke, tipping a wink and a nod to the camera, then it's just not as cool.
And what's with the fuzzy vignetting in the corners of the frame? Either give us straight 4:3 or don't bother.
Parody by numbers and most of the sums don't add up right.
"The camerawork and editing are typical pop video territory..." YES. Agree completely.
I'm not hating on it -- there's no reason for that. But there's so much that could've been better.
Comes off like a rehash of the (comparatively) infinitely better Dragonette version. The concept is cute but somehow translated onto screen it became rather by-the-numbers.
super classy
Of course the coverage and editing is a little exaggerated towards the pop side of things, its a pop artist, pop track and a pop director. I think the video would be quite lame, slow and boring if it exactly mimicked a Western show without exaggerations, or wink and nods.
yeah yeah but why is she orange?
Y'know what else would make it more true to the vintage-ness? Lily changing the lyrics so she isn't on about giving head and sleeping in the wetspot - there is no way that would have made it on TV in the 1970s.
Also ruining things? That accent, what part of Kentucky is she supposed to be from?
hehehh 30f: exactly!
it's a pop vid, i say it does the job well. vignette edges bug me, but franly it's not really aiming to equal Mad Men for period detail, is it?
love it. simple, cool concept that works perfectly as delivery system and cloaking device for a song about oral sex.
as a concept its very easy to grasp which is mucho important when commissioning a video for big act with a global appeal and a lot of people involved in the decision making process.
