Matt & Kim - Lessons Learned (dir: Taylor Cohen & Otto Arsenault)
excellent!
brilliant... though i bet Kim wanted to make another video with just more foodfights...
I dig this, but I wish it didn't end with the bus. Even so it is pretty great.
cool
very nice.
Mite be the best this year, jus' for the ending.... Peng!
nice
I love the video! great idea, wonderful footage! but the ending doesn`t fit into the whole feeling of the song&video in my opinion...
The ending sucks. Don't fit. Hope to see an unpixeld version of the video, too. But wait. hmmm. I mean. The concept is to get naked. so there must be an uncensored version of it. If there is only a pixeld version that would suck, too. Not because I want to see naked people... but that is the concept of the video. so...
It's pixeled because they're wearing flesh colored underwear, that's why Kim's back is pixeled also. Gotta love the little kid who stops are stares right as Matt starts to take his pants off. The ending was unnecessary.
true. I often forget about those things.
I like the bus at the end. It doesn't fit, but that's why I like it. Makes the video seem more "lazy-cool" and less Sigur Ros videos.antville.org
I agree the pointlessness of the end is what makes it good. A parting gift for the audience.
The ending holds this back from being a perfect video but I don't want to dwell on that precisely because this video is so damned close to being perfect.
Brilliant execution, beyond wicked concept, and a good record to go along with the whole thing. It makes me smile. Thanks Matt & Kim. Thanks Taylor Cohen!

what the fuck?! why am I not credited? I fucking co-directed this video watch it over (and over again) at vimeo.com
Hey Otto,
Can you give us some insight into the bus thing at the end? You've probably had some time to sit with the finished video now, so do you think the bus ending helps the video, hurts the video, or is it a neutral thing in your opinion?
I see that even a few comments on Vimeo mention the bus thing and I find all this to be quite interesting. Content creators and viewers now have such a tight relationship that creators can get almost instant feedback. The question is, what do you do with that feedback?
Everyone seems to love the video and it's clearly a brilliant promo but many people feel the ending hurts the piece. Do you listen? Do you ignore? Do you rationalize?
Otto?
K
Ignore Otto, Ignore. You aren't beholden to the arm chair quarterbacks of the internet.
i just have to say that i'm the "real" otto arsenault not the person who commented a few lines up. there is no need for language like that.
we all worked really hard on the video and we couldn't be happier with how the video turned out. we're really stoked that people are talking about it as much as they are. everyone in entitled to their own opinions. so keep the comments coming. but please stop pretending that you're me. not cool.
watched it again. Its absurd that her back is also pixilated. okay. its New York. USA. And I'm european... and i'm confused about the "message". On one side. Get naked. On the other side... you faked it... with skin tone underwear. and pixels. being naked is a statement... I mean. even the old "blink 182" video works better than this. (maybe)
What i try to say is: I think its inconsequent. yeah. thats the word.
Well considering the kerfuffle the Yanks make of using the word toilet, is it hardly surprising luk? U have to say "I am going to use the restroom" ( I mean the only thing u can rest in there, is ur backside on the toilet bowl innit) Still no f'kin' wiv the Germans mate! 'Ich muss'
not feeling this, for reasons mostly mentioned. (but thx for the vimeo, otto & co.)
Is this what labels are talking about when they say they want a video that can "go viral"?
real life version... vimeo.com

Pitchfork behind the scenes: Interview with the band.
I love the "they're not really naked" comments on here. Funny. Reminds me of other message boards where everyone instantly yells "dude that's 'Shopped" when they see an interesting photo.
i call shenanigans
if true, then it begs the question: why censor kim's back?
i don't wanna be the "dude that's 'shopped" guy, but i wouldn't be surprised if matt and kim are lying about their video for self-promotion purposes...
dunno 'bout you guys, but looks like flesh-colored underwear to me
It does seem like they're lying, actually. That's pretty lame.
Also: Yes, the ending isn't very good.
What sucks is that the band even feels like they have to lie in the first place. Who cares if they were wearing underwear or not? It's a music video not a documentary.
personally I believe the anonymous youtube commenter who claims to have been there:
"june18th1988: For people who believe they are actually fully nude, watch again and notice the blurry bar that covers Kim's back. That's because she's wearing a flesh colored bra that they don't want you to see the strap of. I know, I was there when they shot this."
It just makes too much sense. No self respecting cop would believe that some young dude holding an HVX has a real permit to film nudists in times square. But if they're wearing underwear it's just weird enough that they might get by. I don't see "the real otto arsenault" on here denying it.
I do believe the part about the cop being real but who knows. They probably noticed all the press they've been getting and didn't want to spoil their fifteen minutes. Kind of reminds me of something Pitchfork said about a Matt & Kim show, something about using one of their lighting techs as a crowd-surfer plant at one of their SXSW showcases. It's certainly ballsy to strip in times square regardless but I don't think M&K are above fibbing.
PS - I'm starting to wonder about the police now. What exactly would the middle of the video be if that didn't happen. "We didn't expect the police to jump in, but it made for a fantastic sizzle," manager Kevin Patrick said." hmmmm.
you guys are all dumb. saying the ending doesn't fit and that its unnecessary. the name of the video is LESSON LEARNED. its a funny ending to the song to look both ways before crossing the street.
come on guys -- EVERYBODY knows that kim has a NIKE logo tatoo on her back, and THAT'S why they had to pixelate it.
sheesh.
i consider the ending simply the 'lesson learned'... great video.
actually, there is a moment when you can see matts skin coloured underwear, check out the video at the minute 1.59..vimeo.com you can see matts skin coloured underwear under his black underwear its a bit difficult to see, but its definately underwear
