Kanye's unreleased video for Spaceship from College Dropout

goes pretty far for a rap video with a concept.. not many of them anymore

Interesting idea and nice to see people trying something different. At the same time, the pedestrian setting and slow, slooow pacing might have been the opposite of what the label was looking for. This video probably fits the artist's idea of the song very well, but I bet the label wanted something that might push this slower track in a more exciting visual direction. I posted on that issue a ways back - 30frames.blogspot.com.

This is what I wrote about the recent Bat for Lashes clip and I think it applies here as well:

"The list of SUCCESSFUL videos where the artist appears detached (or blase' or tired or disinterested) is quite short. Making a clip with that as the core of the performance is always going to be a very high degree of difficulty. "

Ye walking on in the spacesuit is totally the highlight of the vid. Not sure the Nasa spaceship works at the end though...

Pretty great. Now that I've seen the full video all of those forementioned problems seem pretty insignificant, the story carries whole thing. Whether this got dropped because of label concerns (or maybe Kanye's concerns?) it's a shame.

edit From Kanye's blog: "I DIRECTED THIS VIDEO FOUR YEARS AGO BUT I WASN'T SATISFIED WITH IT SO I NEVER RELEASED IT. BUT NOW LOOKING BACK AT IT I LIKE IT." -Seems like the sort of quality control obsessive thing Kanye would do.
