I don't understand why anyone would want to stay at partizan.30f, June 20, 2009 12:38:52 AM CEST
bodysong - Hmm. What about this video makes you say that? Or is it, perhaps, some other information? Do tell.
senilitynow, June 20, 2009 1:07:19 AM CEST
i know you didn't ask me 30, but i always found it hard to believe they could really push any of their directors when they have so many who do the same kind of shtick. so i assume some got lost in the fold. for example; what happened to saam? is he off doing tons of spots or a feature?
good vid though.

great vid. havent seen any this good in a whilebodysong, June 21, 2009 7:27:44 PM CEST
well partizan operates on a heirarchical level. directors get the spillover from directors above them and directors above them. partizan has like 50 fuckin people signed to it's roster so if you're a new signee, you're going to be waiting around for quite some time before you get the shittiest board you've ever seen in your life. wait six months, and then the same thing happens again.on top of this, it's a very particular brand. it's disposable and hip. the work they tout is a very specific thing. so having a very clever reel doesn't necessarily mean you'll be getting any work. it only reinforces partizan's brand and enables those above you to get more boards.
we should actually open this conversation up a little. with the question being, does it even really make sense to sign with a prod house anymore, and if so, why?
it'd be great to get Alma Har'el to join in on this convo...

Curious, do they impede the director from getting other jobs? When signed, is it exclusive? As an outsider & a consumer of the brand to which you refer,I'm always interested in anything new from the company & generally know it will be of some consistent quality. I just like that kind of stuff.
As far as signing, perhaps it's a safety in numbers mentality? It's a cold world out there after all.

Let me guess bodysong, you're one of those directors that "never got the spillover from directors above them."About the video, did Zach really grow up at the Salton Sea?
shoplifter, June 22, 2009 1:50:26 AM CEST
When you sign to a company it is exclusive. You trade that exclusivity in exchange for them acting as your agent/selling you to labels/agencies. Partizan has 50 directors because it can. It is a very busy company which gets a lot of work. It's rep was initially built off the back of Gondry... and then it all went from there. A lot of companies get pigeonholed based on the reps of their most famous talent but it also depends on the tastes of the reps at the company. Partizan was never really as hip/cool/trendy before the latest rep established her reputation and took their promo dept to the next level.

Partizan is the Nike of music videos right now.And I don't know about that "trickle down" theory.
Seems like a lot their directors have their own niche artists they work with.

Yes,of course. Alma...
How rude. Nice video!
Like the site & blog a lot too.
Good stuff.

Was just browsing the partizan site and couldn't find Saam in the music video section. However I did find him in the commercials section with this statement at the bottom of his bio; 'He has recently opened an independent gallery in London, where he exhibits work from young artists, and develops future projects.'
Has he retired from music videos? Reached the pinnacle and then found more joy in running a gallery? Or became totally disconcerted with the present state of music videos and gave up? Would be interesting to see him try his hand at a feature.
shoplifter, June 22, 2009 2:44:56 PM CEST
He is still on the music video page... But I don't blame him for pursuing other interests at this time.

partizan is no more the hip prod co, el nino/75 seems to be the new one. don't you think?my name is legion, June 22, 2009 4:54:49 PM CEST
nomacguffin, June 22, 2009 6:30:55 PM CEST
El Nino roster is mainly french though and most of their stuff doesn't seem to have much budget behind it besides a few of the J and F videosBut I do like what they're doing.

He wasn't on there the other day. Must have just been doing some maintenance or something. LukeAsa, June 24, 2009 11:19:56 PM CEST
I really liked this. Great shots, excellent timing.kind of expected to see the older cowboy at the ocean, but the LA River was so much darker...it worked well.
anyone know what format they shot on? it almost have a super8 feel...I know you can get 16x9 super8 now, I wonder if it was on that?
