Sade, "Soldier of Love" (dir. Sophie Muller)
Interesting. The final result is quite hit and miss.
I feel like Sade gives a wobbly performance. Sometimes, she looks strong and confident, in the way she moves, or the way she looks off frame or at the camera. But then her eyes dart a little, or a her arm moves in way that suggests uncertainty and discomfort with being alone on stage/in front of the camera. She's at her best when she has something to play with (be it a dancer, a lasso, or a horse). Otherwise, more often than not, she seems to be a bit lost and unsure as to what to do with her body.
The end drags on (when she's facing the group of dancers). No ideas anymore, and the video suddenly loses all its energy. Bad.
The dancers are not great.
But ...
I really liked the dark tone of the video (a change for her really). I like the violence (suggested and opened). The artificiality of the setting. The dark and reds. The tango-like performance. And of some Sade's beats.
In one word: frustrating video.
Any Sade is good with me. She looks great. I would have to agree with nofare it lacks a bit of energy in the edit. Sophie normally does the offline but if it's a matter of footage count I couldn't tell. She just sorta stays there and there's no tempo. Would indeed have love to get a hand on it and just make it crack a little bit.
Quite boring. How much was the budget for this?
ONE MILLION DOLLARS!
was expecting more of a tribal take in the stormy desert, not really the literal soldier thing. also agree with nofare on the awkward edit.
this is a very tricky song to do a video for. not sure sophie, although fantastic, is suited for it. would have liked to see someone like wendy morgan or johan renck play with it. maybe even paul hunter (that nicole scherzinger clip comes to mind).
this is a surprise, caus I've expected a lot more a "sounds-like-she's-never-been-away-album" from sade, but this here is a unwieldy made piece of pop. Sophie Muller tried to bond the whole tjong with a visual concept - but this strategy was to be doomed. i really like the song, but the video wanted to give it a bed and is finally disturbing the the disturbingly nice pop-pearl.
Very beautiful visuals, but the editing and Sade's performance are just awkward.
^ agreed with pancho.
