Gaga is singlehandedly justifying the existence of the entire music video industry. This video is amazing.

captainmarc22, March 12, 2010 at 9:35:53 AM CET

had I not known, I would have guessed David LaChapelle.

I liked it. The styling and performances were pretty excellent. But the concept and 'screenplay' was pretty bad. Would have been a motherfucking classic with a great story.

Any idea how much it cost and how many days the shoot was?

I heard Tarantino owns the Pussy Wagon. I assume he loaned it out for free for the shoot.

robodrug, March 12, 2010 at 9:49:40 AM CET

That there is some muthafukin' video!....

milan, March 12, 2010 at 10:18:13 AM CET

another lady gaga video that makes me cringe. if she were smart, she'd be working with young talent. but she's not smart, so she's going to keep spending zillions of dollars on these clips that are visually assaulting and do absolutely nothing for her music. art is not her strong suit. storytelling isn't either. i wish someone would tell her these things already.

"singlehandedly justifying the existence of the entire music video industry" also made me cringe. i'd love to hold a survey here on this board of how lady gaga has positively affected your career. you'll find that she hasn't.

no - sorry, terrible. Not liking it at all. Interesting obscured muff shot though.

my name is legion, March 12, 2010 at 11:05:01 AM CET

i like the other video better, this one is too 'vice mag' for me. but lady gaga is hot, shes s beautiful in her own peculiar way, skinny, slutty but not too much, smart, those big eyes. perfromance wise, she is in for a thrill (no matter how cheap) and shes got a sense of humour and personality. she looks like she knows very well what she wants from her videos, shes image concscious, and thats a very good thing for an artist, to acknowledge and capitalize on her non-standardized beauty. besides, toldya she didnt have a dick.

Lame video.

proCess, March 12, 2010 at 5:24:10 PM CET

"had I not known, I would have guessed David LaChapelle"...

Was it the "Directed By Jonas Akerlund" credit that gave it away?

spencefilms, March 12, 2010 at 6:27:15 PM CET

Jonas just needs to do one or two more around this length and we can have a pretty sweet Lady Gaga film on DVD, id buy it.

WeddingVideo, March 12, 2010 at 6:29:27 PM CET

sewage. the only product worth buying in this ad are the cinco cigarette sunglasses. the smoke adds an extra layer of shade and works long term to block out the sun.

pancho, March 12, 2010 at 6:55:54 PM CET

9 1/2 minutes of lady gaga? No thnx. The video is stylin and all, i just don't want to get premature brain cancer.

kalstark, March 12, 2010 at 7:32:05 PM CET

Epic. There's no denying that. Given the track I couldn't have in my wildest dreams imagined this would be the resulting video. So, kudos on out-of-left-fieldness too. I also think it's way cool that this exists as a video for an extremely mainstream pop artist. I love how hardcore it is, I love its counterculture sensibilities, and its ability to poke fun at itself.

I still don't really like the video though... It's uneven (e.g., Gaga on the phone with B really doesn't work but the subsequent dance routine is perfect), the video also feels too long, unfortunately Beyonce looks neither good nor comfortable, and they hurt the song by cutting in and out of it so much.

At the end of the day, I'm unsure how to feel about it and I'm curious to see how the public, as a whole, reacts to Gaga's latest creation. But, no matter the reaction, I'm glad this was made, I'm glad I got to see it, and the individuals involved are, without a doubt, mega-talented.

nu_shuz, March 12, 2010 at 7:38:35 PM CET

no. everything akerlund does has this tang of artless, tasteless nastiness about it. beyonce looks decidedly uncomfortable. horrible product placement.

budget, March 12, 2010 at 8:10:49 PM CET

milan, you crazy. More than any other artist, Gaga is showing how videos can turn a musician into an icon. They're risky, they're bizarre, and they get everyone talking. How awesome is it that the world's biggest mainstream pop star is making things like this?

kevin1006, March 12, 2010 at 8:30:36 PM CET

beyonce does look super uncomfortable, jay was probably like "what the fuck you doin b?" also, why all the product placement? super-lame. the story is really strange (pointless) but it's definitely a pretty akerlund vid.

dmann, March 12, 2010 at 8:47:58 PM CET

1.5 million hits on youtube in less than 24 hours and gaga should listen to Milan.

saddy, March 12, 2010 at 10:08:39 PM CET

Immediately after viewing this video I logged onto Plentyoffish.com on my new HP Dr. Dre Beats 15 laptop, donned my Chanel sunglasses and my Lady Gaga Beats by Dre Headphones and took a Polaroid photo for my profile. Feeling a bit peckish I ate a Honey Bun pastry then spread some Kraft Miracle Whip on my Wonder White bread. I washed this tasty sandwich down with a nice Diet Coke. I called my mum afterwards using my new LG phone on the Virgin network to tell her how awesome I am and how fulfilled my life is now.

Thanks Lady Gaga.

0ptical, March 12, 2010 at 10:53:38 PM CET

If the Lady wanted to cause a real shock she'd have Åkerlund make her next video along the lines of his 'Try' film. Plenty of placement possibilities there!

bryanmatic, March 12, 2010 at 11:51:45 PM CET

Has anyone on antville worked on a video with product placement yet? I've worked on some stuff with Fender, Mesa and various band gear, but never a video with products like Beats by Dre or...(dear god) Wonder Bread...

I'm just wondering how it changes the production method, if at all. I wouldn't think there would be a client for each product there at the shoot, but how (and how much) does product placement increase the budget of a music video? Also, I'm assuming turn-around has to be longer for each spot to get approved. I mean imagine, there were probably 5 cuts of this video alone just trying to get the products on screen for the right amount of time.

I mean, we've already seen two 10 minute long epics this year with tons of product placement. If it all has to be censored by MTV anyway, is this the end of large budget music videos on broadcast cable (excluding HBO, etc)?

spencefilms, March 13, 2010 at 12:46:53 AM CET

Ive worked on a few with cell phones, and some other random tech companies, usually there is a product manager there that makes sure there is a hero shot and that it lasts the correct duration. The Beats by Dre should be a given considering its Interscope and considering Gaga's signature Beats by Dre headphones. The polaroid i think is more of a wink and nod than product placement. Im surprised Kraft, Miracle Bread and Virgin were willing to take on such a risky PP deal. Its obvious WHY there is product placement (to pay for it duh).

quixoticnyc, March 13, 2010 at 2:06:02 AM CET

I've long been an Akerlund fan. This feels like classic Akerlund and perhaps it can be confused with LaChapelle because they both play with similar ideas -bubble-gum pop culture. Oddly enough they are both paid handsomely and trusted at the highest corporate levels for their consistency and ability to nail bubble-gum parody. Personally, I lost interest this time around but mainly cause of Gaga, but I do think he almost always nails it. Lastly, there is nothing risky about a label or corporate underwriters aligning themselves with a pseudo naughty performer who is quickly becoming a huge industry unto herself, like a Madonna or Spears.

Would someone just go ahead and help milan find something to hate about this video?

What do you want from Le Gaga? If she does a standard pop video she'd get blasted for making lame mainstream standard pop videos. When she makes something wayyy out there, you dump on it for trying too hard. I think some people just have to admit to themselves that they don't like big expensive pop videos no matter what, and just stay away from them altogether.

robodrug, March 13, 2010 at 5:47:05 AM CET

I don'no, some peeps here are utterly cracked ~

Art for arts sake ~ My arse, is this a BBC public broadcast paid by the taxpayer! So we have a reasonable expectation of some high ended artistic performance and production (abet pop) untainted by commercial concerns?

Super-lame. strange (pointless) ~ No...such videos do have a point, capitalism (though here it's obscured by being couched in terms like corporate identity or product placement) is once again doing what is its nature, finding another avenue to exploit

No one nowadays seriously complains that commercial radio,TV, cable stations and increasingly u2b and a whole phalanx of other music blogs interrupt a persons viewing, to shove fucking commercials up their arm, arse and elbow. That battle's long been lost, if ever it was fought at all?

The powers that be, if they could charge you for the very air you breath, would attach a machine to your head, to cut your oxygen supply, should your payment default.

And you can fucking bet, a myriad of corporate PLC's would be trippin' over video directors spewin' dunzie pon them, to creatively depict their oxygen meter as the brand of desire, never mind efficiently and value, over their competitors, wherever and whenever possible.........

baudfather, March 13, 2010 at 7:22:44 AM CET

They still play music videos on TV? Who'd play this video in it's present form on TV? No muthafukin way! Not only does Gaga have the nuts to get in on the creative aspect of this video (however debatable), imagine how the ad agencies are buzzing after 5 million views in 2 days. Yeah, some odd placemnt with the bread and mayo, but I'm sure somebody's laughing all the way to the bank.

I can't remember the last 10-minute epic music/story video since the 90's. Great looking and fun video to watch... The only thing missing was Gaga in bodypaint in the Miss America outfit.

lashtape, March 13, 2010 at 9:01:33 AM CET

I'm sorry, but that was dreadful. I was a big fan of Akerlunds early work, but I continue to lose faith as his newer work surfaces.

I've said this before and I'll say it again, no matter which director applies themselves to Gaga, it will always seem like they are polishing a turd. So they'll just have to resort to rolling it in glitter. And that is what this video represents to me.

I must say I am looking very forward to when this Gaga craze is over. She evokes no inspiration whatsoever, and it makes me sad that she turns talented directors into a bunch of muppets.

Poison some other universe with your so called 'art'.

L

robodrug, March 13, 2010 at 5:33:59 PM CET

Chuh man! Honey Bun pastries, the UK Geordie baking giant Greggs should have got Gaga to licence them the placement space instead, 'tis the celebrity snack of choice for some it seems!

Polished turd? Boy, that 'id be dissin' a lot of people there :P Here's a run-down of the various designer 'threads' featured No links on the lingerie brands yet tho'. Still seein' hows Triumph sued the arse of Beyonce for her underwear featured in "Video Phone", probably not all that surprising :)

"Its obvious WHY there is product placement (to pay for it duh)."

I wasn't really asking why, I was asking how...but thanks for info!

robodrug, March 14, 2010 at 9:47:45 AM CET

Thanks Gaga (in a roundabout way) Some light has finally been shed on the military like precision of daily deletion's from u2b, of thousands of "fan channel's" and VEVO's invasive sporadic infection of the url and entire internet. Yes perhaps I should have known but I dain't...... Still it might just all be in vain for the empire! :)

spencefilms, March 14, 2010 at 10:39:56 PM CET

@bryanmatic wasn't really directed at you, was saying in general as it seems people complain about PP a lot

jesse.ewles, March 15, 2010 at 12:30:50 AM CET

A kaleidoscope of sexy weirdness. But where to go from here? Me thinks full we'll get full frontal nudity by the end of 2010, since indie videos have been doing it a little over a year now.

Pure trash, but in the finest way. I enjoyed it.

lashtape, March 16, 2010 at 4:52:54 AM CET

Gondry hits the nail on the head - all style (if you want to call it that) no substance.

robodrug, March 16, 2010 at 5:56:18 AM CET

@ pancho Tho' a far more concise shot than Gondry’s rambling :)))

budget, March 16, 2010 at 6:53:11 AM CET

Music videos are one of the few things that can be all style and no substance and still be brilliant. Sounds like Gondry just isn't into Gaga. That's fine, but it's sort of weird they dedicated an entire article to it, as if his opinion on Gaga is newsworthy.

milan, March 16, 2010 at 7:30:51 AM CET

@lashtape i wish it were just style and no substance, but it's neither. :(

my name is legion, March 16, 2010 at 11:16:00 AM CET

gondry is probably upset lady gaga didnt ask the great guru to direct one of her videos; oh, my, and what things he could've done to her...but, as he undoubtedly muttered to himself, too bad she's got a dick and the grapes are sour

but: what's it all mean?

Danziger, March 22, 2010 at 12:08:30 AM CET

From a previous post:

I just saw the "official" video directed by Jonas Akerlund, and director Michel Gondry is right. There's no continuity in the music video. It's just rehashed scenes Akerlund stole from other directors. It's almost laughable that people see greatness in this video, when it's so poorly put together.

As for the hidden meaning or double meaning, it's contrived and forced. The best way to describe the Lady Gaga video is as if Christina Aguilera's Dirty took a major dump into a Quentin Tarantino film, where the toilet paper Akerlund used to clean up the mess through editing was "How to Direct A Shocking Music Video for Dummies." It's a shame that he didn't finish reading that book. There was a glimpse of hope for popular culture.

This version is much better.

Buffy1996, April 22, 2010 at 8:05:02 PM CEST

To Danziger Either you are blind, stupid or just plain crazy. Whatever, get over yourself and admit genius when you are in its presence. Your words only reflect poorly on yourself. what is seen here has nothing to do with your elitist and snobbish attitude. You'll need to get off your high horse to even see it.

kevathens, April 22, 2010 at 8:20:01 PM CEST

Hating on Gaga is apparently a celebritrend. Best get used to it. (She'll be back, honey.)
