MGMT "Congratulations" Dir. Tom Kuntz
Tom once again shows how it's done...
TK - KO. Filled my day with hope for the future.
and again: "not available in your country" .... I fucking hate geoblocking. And no.. I don't want to change my DSL Router settings. Because internet connection gets really slow. ... Not Youtube faults... more "music company fault"... they want money from google aka youtube!!!! I can't believe it. A Music Video is nothing more than an commercial.
(excuse my bad english)
... So is there any other link... I'm a huge Fan of Tom Kuntz AND MGMT. .
Awesome video. Loved the weird camel and desert is the new black.
I had a feeling that would disappear... Oh well. It's worth waiting for.
Could Someone please download the mp4/flv with the Addon "Downloadhelper" or something and upload the file on rapidshare! That would be nice for all german/european/wherever people.
PLEASE !!!
. . .
Theme of the month: Sick, dying, deformed animals and the hipster bands that love them.
Supposedly budget for this was about 80k and MJZ gave Kuntz another 100k to do this. They were originally going to shoot this in 3D (stereoscopic).

lusk81: thanks... but can't watch it. Got Media Player Classic & FFDShow and VLC Player. And Quicktime. hmmm. the 'original' youtube file must be a flv or an mp4 file. No need to convert it. If noone posting another link I will check some codec finder tools or.... I don't know.
Feel like something else was supposed to happen in this video but didn't. Wanted it to be more interesting. Feel like I'm supposed to like this because it's MGMT/Kuntz/offbeat, but disappointed that the final product is just a lot of walking in a desert with a puppet.
Yeah.
yeah this was pretty cool but when I heard (months ago) MGMT + Tom Kuntz + desert + 180K budget I was expecting something big and epic. This is a cool video but could have used a bit more ideas in it to make it a classic.
Like: more encounters with people or things in the desert, more story twists, day to night transitions, etc.
Then again, it's a short song.
Sort of reminded me of Encyclopedia Pictura.
walkity walk walking.
wankity wank wanking.
Looked really fantastic, amazing puppet, great grade. but i just wish there was a little more to the story.
feels a bit empty. And the "fade away in the sand" scene is double. (excuse my bad english) ... and the whole story is kinda absurd. but not in a good way. the eye in the sand.. than the stars. (Soul?) its not really connected. And that building !? and the desert? ... and the applause at the end. They save this creature,... it dies.. they clap. boring video.
To be fair, this song is super boring.
feels like the video is going for an idiosyncratic charm, but just ends up kinda boring b/c of the leisurely pace of filmmaking. the song is sleepy time too. but then again the expectations are very high for an mgmt + kuntz collab.
I have a feeling some of you guys are a product of the MTV / youtube zero attention span disease.
Yeah, the problem is definitely the idiot simpletons who can't comprehend the deep themes of this video, and NOT the fact that the video is just two indifferent hipsters walking a decomposing puppet through the desert for 3 minutes. I mean sheesh, at least Yeasayer's video had Kristen Bell in it.
I said nothing about 'deep themes'. Its a simple, cute, slightly funny, pure fantasy piece.
Budget, I just think you are expecting too much.
If you have almost 200k to work with and a band that's begging for kooky ideas, you better deliver something interesting. This felt undershot and the idea was half-baked. The basic premise is introduced in the first 15 seconds and then nothing happens. Don't blame it on people's attention spans. I think this might be a case of certain people giving this too much credit on account of the names involved.
Let me summarize the last 3 years in music video trends for everyone:
- Stop motion whimsicalness
- 5D
- People in animal masks for no reason.
- 7D (borrowed from producers flatmate)
- Emotional puppetry.
I wonder what's next?
- The Occult
- Nudity
- Alien Invasion
- Bloggers commenting on videos within the videos themselves
- Adobe After Effects.
@Budget... I think you have me gravely misunderstood. I couldn't care less about names involved. If you look at my record of comments you would see this. However I do like Tom Kuntz's humor and I also like fantasy, animatronics, puppetry, weird animals, the desert and music videos that don't rely on a vomiting of multiple half assed ideas that end up going nowhere.
To be honest the 180k budget surprises me but I like this nonetheless.
Maybe these days Tom Kuntz should stick to commercials. But seriously why on earth would anyone think MJZ or Tom Kuntz would put a cent of their own cash into this?
It would be the icing on the cake if the band could squeeze a bit more expression out but either way, I found this beautiful, sad and charming. I can't help watching this over and over again.
to respond to mgmtw, kuntz is one of mjz's heavies. if you've ever worked at a production house, you would know that houses are sometimes very willing to eat costs to keep their directors happy. ask any working commercial director. the idea of mjz giving kuntz 100k is not surprising. furthermore, 180k for a commercial director is like 20k for a music video director - their needs and comfort levels (financially) are very different.
Not sure I would label him a 'commercial' director as much as 'big' director. He's done more videos than many directors who have work posted here.
I did find this touching, the puppet has emotive eyes, better acting than the band.
Surely the budget wasn't what people are claiming. Although the animatronic chicken/camel couldn't have been cheap. Apparently the gorilla in the Cadburys ad cost 90K. But still...
Some of you kids are are spoiled adhd youtube brats. This was really great.
really disappointing. just bad. 180k for this should be seen as an incredible embarrassment.

Boring!
Hey Antville Gang... Tom K here...
Just to set the record straight... the budget for this video was not 180 K (much less) and my production co (MJZ) did not contribute one dime to it.
To those of you who enjoyed.. THANKS!
To those of you who didn't.. THAT'S COOL TOO!
