Gil Scott-Heron "New York is killing me" (Chris Cunningham)
Premiered last night at the MOMA
if i may: gondryesque!
three channel projection @ MoMA Cunningham also plays guitar and synthesizer on the album version of the track
not a music video.
yes, kays: this is a single-screen condensed(?) version.

vj alert.
Funny, I was thinking Star Guitar and Vangelis too. Music was great.
Can't watch it. The server is so fucking slow. damn.
Haunting. Will watch again.
I have to admit, I don't love the Gil Scott close up, but man - this guy is dope. I just don't understand how you can hate on CC's work. He's fantastic.
the video is just as slow as the server. i love CC but honestly this was just a bore, i didnt get it nor was it visually interesting enough to keep my attention. i kept watching drifting off, thinking of how i had to take a shower and get to bed.
piore has a point. the end dragged out and didn't seem to go anywhere except into a heavy mood. i like it though.
also -- this feels 'sloppier' than cunnigham's other work. like images don't look like they've been hyper polished (consider the bridge overlay sequence, some of it is smooth, other images are screened over in a more sloppy way). wondering if he's trying to let go of that over obsessiveness.
in my opinion cunningham's over obsessiveness is what makes him an artist. this was more of a rough cut for me. a little disappointing but i do agree it's a decent mood piece but nothing more.
(y'all are taking into account that unless you were at MoMA to see the three-screen-projection version, what you're pontificating about is a mini-screen condensed version - right. right?)
Also, it was probably a whole lot easier for Cunningham to be "obsessive" when he had a 6 figure budget (or in the case of Rubber Johnny, as much time as he wanted).
Look at the most recent work from Cunningham, Gondry, Glazer, Jonze- it's easy to see that most of their past detail oriented work is almost impossible today without the giant budgets that they were used to working with.
new undercover U2B:
am with piore
i didn't know about the 3 screen composite - makes a lot more sense.
Felt great to me. The mood is definite and unwavering.
Deserves a rewatch. This was made for 3 screens and anyone who only saw the single channel of this needs to rewatch.
did anyone rip the single screen version? its not available anymore...
do you still want the single channel version? (above link is the three channel version icami)
yes, please!
the three screen version i was able to rip from the official website (in f4v as posted by msm above) but i would like to keep the single screen version too!
thank you kayser_sauze! :D
