James Blake - Limit to your Love - M. De Thurah
Some very interesting, very pretty stuff -- but his work is becoming increasingly slight. I wonder if this approach is beginning to detract the power of his videos...
Hey Lusk,
What do you mean by 'increasingly slight'? Are you saying this video and his recent work feels shallow or uninspired or are you suggesting something else.
Either way, I don't find this video particularly interesting. It's also strange how uneven it is. The cinematography seems to randomly switch between being semi-inspired and somewhat unappealing, the concept has nice moments but also comes off half-baked and unfocused, the performance (what little there is of it) is far too lackluster, and by the end of the whole thing I feel a pretty strong sense of blah.
It's a bit disappointing to find out that this comes from De Thurah.
De Thurah definitely has a great eye and an interesting look, but his spots are all about atmosphere and style. He needs budgets that can allow him to create a world. This has the look of something that was trying to push beyond a limited budget and didn't quite make it.
I'm a big MDT fan but you definitely can't blame budget, I know this from 1st hand experience!!!
cap'n, what was the budget on this?
KAL: The work is becoming less and less about something (concept, narrative, character, etc). He's always been a mood guy but I'm not sure the mood is maintaining a kind of power on its own. It's becoming increasingly slight, not "shallow" or "uninspired".
For me, his work has always benefitted from having some kind of conceptual semblance. While here, we see floating apples, a heartbroken man, and a hole in the ground. I'm not sure how they relate, but the video makes very little attempt at proving that they do.
And btw, I have a feeling this is Tuxen behind the lens and if so, hats off once again.
this video is incredible, i want to sleep forever in it.
I'll dream with you lloyds. so moody and inspiring. martin is back in my top 3.

good song
ok so i wasn't feeling this the first time i watched. then i watched it with nice headphones on and the rumbling bass actually adds to the enjoyment of the video.
the concept is still a bit too loose though.
