Kanye West "Mercy" - Dir. Nabil
bullshit
Meh. Nabil will never top the datamosh video.
I think Kanye’s just bored with everything at this point, including music videos
Reminds me of this
Every video Kanye has been a part of since Watch the Throne (Otis-this) has been a letdown. I can't help but feel that his last 4-5 videos have been hyped primarily because his name is on it and he's become a brand associated with capital A "art" and whatnot. Just more content for blogs that repost things excitedly without actually watching them.
He's worked himself into a creative corner and I feel like he's just treading water at this point.
for fun, looking at his last videos:
Mercy: zzzzz... No Church in the Wild: zzzzz... Lost In the World: as a Ruth Hogben fan it was cool to see, but still, zzzzz... N****s In Paris: zzzzz... Otis: fun, but a little boring after awhile Monster: cool All of the Lights: glorified youtube lyric video Runaway + Short Film: boring + retarded Power: really cool, until it ended 3 minutes short
So basically, Nabil's 3 videos for the 808s album were the last videos that are pretty unquestionably dope, so he gets kind of a pass for this one
"zzzzz" doesn't count as an actual criticism.
agghh shit... boo to me.. if i were to explain the shooting situation, but that wouldnt work here! i still love antville
you're still a good dude, nabil... were you given a 20 minute window where all four guys were on set at the same time? (like all posse cut videos go)
kozoru, I usually hit my "I'm wasting my life" threshold so quick with music video critique, so replace "zzzzz" with "boring" or "letdown" or something
I's guess that skew is added to give the impression of an anamorphic lens, or to just be a little weird.
This is probably gonna sound harsh, but...
It's not like anybody's saying the video is a disaster. It's much worse in a way, it works but it's not very interesting.
I quite like it.
landed at airport, went to location.. shot in parking garage under where he was shooting his film, did what i thought would be most interesting with a parking garage and 6 dudes with concept made on the spot.... the slant sucks. AGREED... would loved to have had a proper level/ or a post house that could correct that without cropping in more on heads... pick your battle. if its a sleeper, pop some aderol and watch it again
Cool/fair enough.
BTW is it just me or is there a lip sync problem?
"cool/fair enough". I'm sure Nabil will rest easier tonight knowing that he's got your blessing.
Comparing every single video that comes through by the same yard stick will result in some disappointment guys... Instead of putting this down to failures by the director, you do have to understand that sometimes a director has to battle against the various briefs/budgets/time constraints that they are gifted with.
Dude Nabil, don't waste your time going over the finer points of production 101 with anonymous commentators who don't know what they're talking about. The internet loves this video and you did a great job with a tough shoot schedule. Why are you apologizing to film school dropouts? They can't tell you nuuuthin.
lol you just said this video was a letdown before Nabil gave his two cents. I think it's great to hear the story behind a music video production, what's wrong with that? Thanks for the insight, Nabil.
i still stand by my original comments, i just don't think nabil owes anyone an apology or an explanation.
lol @ film school dropouts video's cool, it's kanye that seems to not care.
Are you guys being snobbish on behalf of the director who's actually trying to keep it real? I think Nabil can speak for himself.
Anyway the thing is a video can't really be panned on YouTube, the question is whether the fans will tune in for the next video or find another, more exciting artist, if you don't challenge them enough.
I think Stupid Hoe might be the only time I've seen a music video get trashed on youtube (with a Sith lightsaber like/dislike bar). Youtube comments are all about the artist, the video's kind of invisible to them, and it's almost always Jedi lightsabers on the likes/dislikes.
jedi lightsaber, lol
budget, u suck-up: theres enought internet for us filmschool dropouts to roam and rant freely. a director should know that theres a time he should just say no to a project that doesnt feel right. if he does decide to take on that, he must also own up. nabil jusdid dat, and we respect him for it
re: video - ive seen better videos shot on a shoestring, where the passion shows:
