The Lovely Bad Things - Big Sur and Wematanye- @ the Glass House FYF 2010 pre-show -

FYF Presents Show at the Glasshouse in Pomona - August 13, 2010 Featuring Wavves, Crystal Antlers, The Growlers, Abe Vigoda, The Lovely Bad Things, Comadre, Glasses and Animalitos.

To promote the 2010 FYF Festival set in the Los Angeles State Historic Park in downtown Los Angeles, FYF held a pre-show at the Glass House featuring 8 bands. The bands were split between the main stage at The Glass House and a smaller venue at Aladdin Jr's down the block. Since I cannot clone myself like Youtube's Wheezywaiter I was only able to catch Wavves, Crystal Antlers, The Growlers, Abe Vigoda and The Lovely Bad Things - (my apologies to Comadre, Glasses and Animalitos). This review is excerpted from a larger review of the whole show-

The Lovely Bad Things formed in October of 2009 when Camron Ward, (guitar, bass, vocals, drums), sent Lauren Curtius, (guitar, bass, vocals), the text message: "Let's start a surf pop band." Having just performed at the Locally Grown series which highlights up and coming bands and presented by the OC Weekly and World Famous KROQ, the Lovely Bad Things were the last but not least addition to the FYF preshow and were the first band to grace the main stage. They opened the festivities with Tim Hatch, (guitar, bass, vocals, drums), fanning his guitar with an effected guitar that ebbed and flowed and swelled until the entire band kicked in loud and furious. Drummer Brayden Ward, (drums, guitar, bass, vocals), took on the lead vocals on the opening number and, while brother Camron Ward sung the lead vocals on most of the songs, every member of The Lovely Bad Things sing both lead and backing vocals. In fact they all switched up instruments during their multi-faceted set which bounced from grand surf punk pop tunes to mosh inducing punk grinders to the summery drive down the PCH with the top down- "Cult Life". Front man Camron- bounced and danced throughout the set with guitar or without and fell to the stage floor during the blistering - "Cocaine Werewolf" belting out his vox while the crowd created a moshing whirlpool. Lauren Curtius took center during "Big Sur" a big, stirring surf punk song with a heavy tom tom beat reminiscent of Bow Wow wow- (you remember Bow wow wow don't you?)- They finished off their set with a big, lush churner of a song that reminded me of Sergio Leone and long boarders at Waimea Bay, (Wematanye), as Tim and Camron batted vocals back and forth. They left the enthusiastic crowd wanting more. Do yourself a favor and check out The Lovely Bad Things the next time they do a show.

Toro Y Moi - Low Shoulder (Dir. Elisha Smith-Leverock & Chris Murdoch)

For the video to Toro Y Moi's latest single "Low Shoulder" the directors Elisha Smith-Leverock and Chris Murdoch have drawn inspiration from everything over pulp magazines and Cinderella to sploshing and mono-brows. It's a nod to Italo-horror flics form the 70ies and 80ies. It features an appearance by 60ies it-girl Daphne Sherman, wife of the legendary mod taylor Ben Sherman, who stars as a demented ballroom dancing reject/ waitress.

"According to Chaz the song was written for his girlfriend asking her to not fall asleep whilst driving. We based the video on the idea of this sleep-deprived girl calling at a roadside diner for a coffee. Next thing you know she's semi-conscious and experiencing some really weird sh**"

Low Shoulder was shot in studio and on location at the Marina Cafe on Mare Street, Hackney on very small budget with the help of a rather energetic and like-minded crew.
