2009: A year in Edits
This post is dedicated to the edits (roll music).
It's safe to say that 2009 had some great clips, and some swam and some sank based on their post.
This is a collection of the ones I thought swam, I'm sure there's more. In no particular order:
Royksop "This must be it" Ed: Unknown.
Who cut this? I looked everywhere and couldn't find a credit. This is one of the best cut videos I've seen in awhile. That concept would've fell flat in lesser hands. Perfect.
Hecq vs Exillion "Spheres of fury" Ed: Christopher Hewitt & Tim Brown
This is straight out the Cunningham playbook (good thing) and it is incredible. I wish it were longer. The twitchy editing style could be out of place, but here it works. That color grade is incredible.
Vitalic "Poison Lips" Ed: Julian Levy
It tells you everything and absolutely nothing, perfectly timed.

CSS "Move" Ed: Keith Schofield. This came out in 2008 but what the heck.
Gotta give props to Keith on this, the timing is perfect and the sequence just moves. The framing device is neat.
Super Submarina "Super Submarina" "Ed: Guillem Ventura?
Striking juxtaposition of images, cohese.
Charlotte Gainsbourg Feat Beck "Heaven Can Wait" Ed: Keith Schofield.
The preferred cut is this one, it's so much better than the one the label released. Differences are minimal, but tone is different. It has the shot of the guy getting the wax poured. It's more sinister. Watch Charlotte's perf on this one, it's darker. Beautifully done post production.
Jarvis Cocker "Further Complications" Ed: Edouar Mailender.
Clever. Timed greatly.
The Hickey Underworld "Blonde Fire" Ed: Manu Van Hove
It's kinda hard to fuck this one up. A very original video.
"Neurosonics Audiomedical Labs Inc" Ed: Editor: Joe Randall Cutler.
I know how hard it must've been to sync that stuff.
Birdy Nam Nam "The Parachute Ending" Ed / Compositor: James Littlemore.
Bravura work.
Franz Ferdinand "Can't stop feeling" Ed: Russell Weekes.
Fun. Pain in the ass must've been.
Health "Die Slow" Ed: Unknown.
Late addition to my list, this is great save for wishing the framing on the mediums was same aspect ratio as the main video. Good job.
Conscious: 2009 saw some striking clips, notice the absence of big videos? that's because their coverage is shot to pieces in post. All those Rihanna and Gaga videos go from close up to medium and back and forth, or they look like a drunk Editor (or Director) cut them to appease the suits. Post deadlines severely compromise into what can be done, and some labels see post as a throwaway. I know because nobody seems to have money for it.
Any video can be cut well with proper timing and skill, the good directors (like Schofield) time their edits in their head (or animatic) while CERTAIN artsy ones worry about how it's gonna cut later. Nobody knows who we are anyways. I'm sure there's more, I turn over the mic to Antville.

"a few months ago i was talking to my friend mark pellington and i asked him to make a short film/video for the song 'one time we lived'. the only condition was that i wanted him to make something artistic and personal, without any concerns for whether or not it would ever actually get played on tv.
he's made a very personal and very emotional video, and i love it. he shot it on his home video-camera, which is in keeping with the nature of the album, which was recorded in my bedroom. i hope you like what he's made, and i hope that you appreciate the honesty and the beauty in his short film/video as much as i do. thanks.

Prospect Hill, "Roller Coaster", Dir Enki Studios (Jeff Melanson, Chris Bolarinho)
Prospect Hill, one of the East Coasts biggest unsigned bands has recently teamed up with Enki Studios to film a "One shot" Music Video. A "One Shot" is filmed as one continuous shot with no editing. The music video is for their single "Roller Coaster" off their new "Self Titled" Album. The video stars MTV's Real World Brooklyn's "Fitness Guru" Scott Herman. The video goes through a party as if you were sitting in the car of a roller coaster. While being taken on the ride you see things you would expect to happen at a raging house party. While the party is going on you see glimpses of the band members individually performing and no one at the party acknowledging them, as if they are aren't even there. In the meantime Scott Herman is going through a relationship roller coaster himself, being portrayed in flash back scenes with different girls. The ending shows everyone running down stairs and into a room to go and rock out with Prospect Hill as they perform for the whole party. Just like a roller coaster it ends where it begins with Scott Herman back outside the party in his car.
