SICKBOY "SILENCE IN CONVERSATION" from LORCANFINNEGAN on Vimeo. The second music video I directed for Dublin band Sickboy. There are a few idea behind this video; two of the band members, Colm and Brian are identical twin brothers - like carbon copies of each other, which got me interested in the idea of copying and reproduction of images. I was also interested in the aesthetic of the home made fliers and self promotional material being produced by local bands, often cracked and torn black and white photocopies showing a picture of the band and a date etc. Also the idea of animating 'silent' photocopies of a face smushed up against the glass of a photocopier to make it appear as though they are singing was part of the idea.. So I photocopied colm's face in a photocopier and got him to move it around as the light from the copier passed his face to create distortions - we made hundreds of photocopies with all the main mouth/facial shapes needed for lip sync. Then I shot them playing on whitescreen, photocopied the frames etc - put the mouth shapes in order and photographed and composited them. It took a while!

SICKBOY "TAKEN AWAY IN A CAR" from LORCANFINNEGAN on Vimeo. A quick video I made for Dublin band Sickboy for their single and EP launch. I only had 1 day to shoot something and a couple of days with an editor to cut it. Little spy cameras were mounted onto the guitar heads and drumsticks etc so that I could get close up without making them feel self conscious. The song is about a death "taken away in a car", so I thought a car crushing yard could reflect some of the songs content, where cars go to die etc.. it was nice to work on something lo-fi with such a fast turnaround!

Everyone has an opinion about Anton Newcombe. He is a controversial figure, inspiring strong reactions of both devotion and criticism. In 2004, Ondi Timoner released her award-winning documentary Dig! that followed the lives and careers of the bands The Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Dandy Warhols for seven years. Anton has denounced his depiction in the film that propelled him further into the public spotlight. As the founder and the only continual member of The BJM, he is well-versed in more than eighty instruments and equally competent at producing and running record labels. His musical prodigy and his influence on the current music climate cannot be denied.

In this episode of Rehearsal Space, Anton talks about the process of making the BJM’s ninth studio album, My Bloody Underground. He explains how his non-music interests lead him to use multimedia in his art; for example, they’re releasing a video piece to go with every song on the album. Finally, Anton shares his opinions on the subjects of free music, criticism, and songs as performance art.
