Following the breakout success of “Fight Song,” Rachel Platten’s empowering track “Stand By You” was released on September 11, 2015 as its follow-up single, preceding her third studio album.

Platten wrote the track along with Jack Antonoff (of Fun. and Bleachers fame), Joy Williams (formerly of The Civil Wars), and Matt Morris.

“Sign of the Times” is a slow paced pop-rock track about avoiding emotion and reality during times of grief and hardship. The song draws inspiration from ‘70s rock songs from artists like David Bowie and Queen.

The track is Harry Styles' debut solo single after releasing five studio albums and going on four world tours with the global sensation pop band One Direction. “Sign of the Times” is also the lead single from Harry’s debut self-titled album and was released on April 7, 2017, over a year after One Direction began their hiatus.

“Malibu” is about Miley getting back together with her fiancé Liam Hemsworth after their breakup in 2013. In a May 3, 2017 interview with Billboard, Miley spoke about the breakup:

I needed to change so much. And changing with someone else not changing like that is too hard. Suddenly you’re like, ‘I don’t recognize you anymore.’ We had to refall for each other.

Hemsworth has previously been the subject matter of Miley’s music; he was the inspiration behind her 2013 hit “Wrecking Ball.”
