The Futureheads - Decent Days and Nights
A video by the Futureheads ... I am really impressed! lifelongfriendshipsociety.com
it's a nice video. i heard there are two videos for this track after the uk clip was deemed not to be up to snuff, any idea whether this is the original or the re-do?
the video made me remember an interesting flash band webpage i saw recently - www.deadfrenchmen.com
yep, the other version of the clip is at - www.thefutureheads.com
the other version is a fairly stock warehouse performance video. it's not bad, but jesus - the footage of the comatose drummer is a worry!
it looks to me like the footage from the "real" version is what was used to make the video that I posted ... but I could be wrong there ...
They seem to be dressed differently in the the two videos.
I wanted to hate this for being all meaningless graphics, but the way it is edited is pretty amazing.
excellent design work - very talented people working with very little concept. still, the strobe effect sucked, and after 2 mins, it's like, what next?
I know gimmick isn't the best quality for a video, but think of the videos you tell people about - "the pharcyde video where they're rapping in reverse" - "the blur video about a milk carton who searches for the missing person" - I dunno, how would you explain this? "This cool futureheads video where there's graphics and stuff." I'm sure people disagree, but I like that one line summary that so many of these all-style videos lack.
this is an interesting one. technically - it's super tight, and stylistically "it's so hot right now" semi lo-fi cut & paste with 80s sensibilities and currrent post production values, but I must agree that the videos that are truly groundbreaking and stand the test of time do something more than nailing the current design trends in an engaging manner. Cool now - yes of course - but in five, ten years; probably forgettable. I guess there can only be so many pioneering videos we call classics. It depends how we want to critique - if it does the job now - is it not truly great?
I think the only thing that can really be said about this video is that it took a lot of skill to make. Otherwise, it's a run-of-the-mill, average, flashy, motion-graphics-school exercise in creating a promo in the style-du-jour. I'd love to see someone take that kind of post-production technology and make something unique, and original, or at least try to.
Actually, there are lots of people doing that. Anybody watch Diesel Dreams? Just not these people I guess. Is true uniqueness too inaccessible for mass public broadcast consumption? Is no one willing to take a risk in animated promos (save a select few like Shynola)?
Something to ponder.
word...
The more I watch this, the more I love it. I agree that lazy motion graphics can get tired pretty fast, but this is just non-stop visual fun. Much more effective than the Thurah video or the Daughters video. I like to think of good motion graphics performance videos as the visual equivalent of funk music, a solid exercise built around 1 or 2 riffs and a single chord, but so relentless and energetic that it won't let go of your attention (or something like that). This is one of my favorite spots of the last few years.
def tight, this, spit - but a bit apples&oranges vis. de thurah&daughters, no? (this one's basically a tricked-out lo-fi alex&martin 7 nation army.)
I think as far as effectively keeping up with the Futureheads spastic energy, this piece is far more spot on then the Daughters/ De Thurah pieces even though they're using a different set of tools. I'm not sure if they're really apples and oranges, maybe the 'heads' music just lends itself more to motion graphics fueled pieces.
