Shitkicking Performance from Diamond Dogs - far and away the best thing the boys have done and best video from Colonel Blimp in ages.
Link?
pretty good, but alot like the Tomorrow's brightests minds video for the datsuns.
Holy shit. I'm trying not to get too emotionally involved, but it's totally a ripoff of the TBM Datsuns video. Like, they showed the video to the band and said "we're just gonna make this video for you guys". Unbelievable.
At the same time, though, I kinda liked it. sigh
By the way, here's the link to the Cribs video: extreme.colonelblimp.com
And here's a link to the Datsuns video: www.tomorrowsbrightestminds.com
gotta admit, I kind of liked both; but neither come close to Shynola's Rapture video.... the Cribs song is pretty awesome.
still, there's an "instantly forgettable" quality to these kinds of videos....
Well, you can't really count the Rapture video, as it's all graphics & shit. These two videos had each frame printed out and then hand drawn on top of them.
Don't get me wrong, I love the Rapture video, but it's a different process.
They are absolutely identical. Diamond Dogs blatantly and utterly ripped off the TBM video. And the weirdest thing is that Diamond Dogs did it much better. The Cribs video is simply better than the Datsuns one. How does that work? I guess you can do a lot if the concept you are working with took no original thought.
RUBBISH
Not only all that biter shit...but they also rip off the artistic style of many artists... the "rays" coming off of them is totally keith haring, and the crowns on the shirts and above their heads is totally jean michel basquiat. so it seems that not only do they rip off ideas and concepts but content as well...they couldnt come up with their own original idea or the stuff in that idea...not to hot, biters!
I don't see any issue with being inspired by artists in other mediums. Keith Harring and Basquiat are both well known, but odds are you can find a pop arist who's style precedes just about every visually-oriented music video. Music video directors typically have libraries of art/design books for this specific reason.
no, i am not againts using inspiration. i use a lot of other styles in my work, i get inspired and build off that. but to purely bite their style is wrong. to take their work and to use it as your own. the keith haring and basquiat elements in the video are not inspired, they are straight copies. the crowns with the unfinished corners is a direct basquiat usage. its just seems worse ontop of the the concept being a rip off. but its nto inspiration its copying.
I really doubt the directors knew about the TBM video when they did it. Working as a director myself, the kiss of death for any idea is finding out someone else already did it. And come on, if you were going to straight up rip off another video, would you really pick this?
Regardless, this concept is no quantum leap in human imagination. It's animated photocopies. It's a pretty obvious thing to come up with if you work with animation and stand once in front of a photocopier and watch the various frames coming out. People have been doing this concept long before the Datsuns though. I saw a short film like this from the 60's in film school.
All that said, I commend all the directors for making it work. They are both decent videos for what I'm sure was no money at all. I imagine both took a crap load a time and the effort does show. Next time do the whole thing in legos though.
Im trying to remember, did the Rob Base "It takes Two" video have the photocopy effect, maybe that was actually the first.
one more directly ripped element is street artist aboves arrows...

fellfromthesky, good point, regardless if the idea was harvested wholesale, it still seems to be a mediocre video. Im sure these chaps can do better...
You are all a bunch of nit picking wankers.
The video cost a poxy ten grand and its absolutely excellent.
If any one of you commissioned it you'd be pleased as punch.
I know I am!
shitbox - just saw the tomorrows brightest minds video.
oops!
shut up gets the trophy on the rob base & dj ez rock ref! I think that may have been the first. I can think of other later vids with similar techniques (De La Soul, PM Dawn, DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince [on wall, not film]...), though not many that tried photocopying.
All 3 vids (Rapture/Cribs/Datsuns) are great. Mainstream videos need to bring this thing back, it's really fresh still.
Sorry, I know I'm just pissing in the wind here, 15 months later..
so curious, how you came back to this, so long after? but thanks!
I forget, actually. Travails in boredom, no doubt.
