Overlaid flowers like this always makes me think of The Cell. Did it pop up anywhere before then?
"The Cell"s director is of Indian origin. In that country flowery borders are normal elements of the religious iconography. But you don't have to go that far to the East to see that type of design. For exemple, in many of the paintings and illustrations coming out of the "Art Nouveau" movement (end 19th / beginning 20th century) one can see borders full of flowers or leaves. Actually a lot of the designs in "Art Nouveau" (the fonts for instance) are inspired by foliage.
So you see, nothing new under the sun.
