Joaquin is now repped by Anonymous.
not bad- bit disjointed towards the end in how it's covered and HATE the ending- what you bitches think?
Anyone notice Dermot Mulroney as the referee?
This was pretty solid considering it’s the first thing he’s ever directed and you gotta admit, it’s rare when a video tells a real story and gets away with it and they accomplished that here. Over all I enjoyed it.
However, I’m also convinced that Shawn Kim can make anything look great so we’ll have to see what comes next. For Mr. Pheonix.. Has SK ever shot a BAD video? If anyone has anymore info about any Non-Daughter’s projects he’s shot, it would be worth a post.
The ending…well I certainly wasn’t expecting that so I didn’t hate it. Was it a little corny? Definitely...
Yes! Research time!
mvdbase.com unfinished videography
He's also worked for Laurent Briet for Moments in Grace "Stratus", Dougal Wilson for LCD Soundsystem "Tribulations", Gary Breslin and Sam Cole for Nitro "Microphone Underground"
Here's Shawn on the YYYs vid (scroll down)
Great look kev! I know shawn personally and he's very much so on top of his game technically. Always working as well which is a good sign for a young DP.
He just shot the new Kings of Leon promo in texas with daughters.
Shawn Kim is on the whole an excellent DP. He directed the current Autolux promo which also looks quite nice (not sure if posted here yet, will look for it).
Generally this video impressed me, as the first time I saw it I didn't see the credit at the begining and was very curious to seee who had done it, expecting some exciting new imported talent. Was definetly surprised to see Phoenix's name on it, though I think there's another actor in this band...Balthazar Getty maybe?
In regards to Jiegen's querey, I generally like Shawn's work quite a bit, but feel that he nails some types of looks much better than others. So yes, he has shot things that look poor, a few actually, though conviently none listed. Offhand, the "Automatic Girl" clip he shot for Sam Erickson looked like absolute shit for one.
Lusk81 are you reffering to the "King of the Rodeo" clip or a new one?
Nah a brand new one. It's supposed to be part live footage - shot at the end of their most recent tour - combined with just hang out footage. Very similar to the yyy's tour promo he did w/daughters.
As far as autolux, I just posted it.
I dont really like it, i dig Kim's work. But the treatment seems boreing to me, i actulay thought i saw the same clip 4 times? the DP work is great though!
I know Shawn's work really well. I think he is talented but I think some people on antville gush over him a little too much. I think b/c of the uber hip bands he has shot videos for. imho, he may be a bit of a 1 trick pony. His great looking videos all have a certain look and they all have low key lighting and are shot in anamorpic. He has shot 2 of the most beautiful videos I've ever seen though, YYY "Maps" and The Secret Machines "Nowhere Again," but again these 2 fall into this category in regards to look. BTW, both Patrick Daughter (HUGE TALENT!) videos.
He's also shot some videos that look like crap such as Sam Cole's Nitrow video and Daughters' The Futureheads "Hounds of Love." Right now, I don't think Shawn is diverse enough and definitely can't shoot a beautiful looking pop video yet. That doesn't mean he won't be able to in the future but for now.
A dp that I think is on top of his game and can shoot any genre is Danny Heile. He's the man and I'm glad that the mvpa recognized that this year.
In regards to Joaquin, he may have gotten his 3 videos, Ringside, People in Planes and She Wants Revenge b/c of who he is, but he's the real deal. He comes to set well prepared and knows exactly what he wants. He gets great coverage (which is a big part of directing, mind you NOT writing, DIRECTING!) and as a result, the editing on his videos turns out great. I expect to see him directing a feature within the next couple of years.
All your assertions about Shawn Kim don't contain any information on whether or not those videos that in your opinion look awful had him present for the telecine or final grade, or whether he was overruled by the director or production company or label, or if there was even enough of a budget for a grade.
Grades are a massive part of the look of music videos today. Why do videos look so absolutely different than videos from the 80s and 90s? Because the processes have gone from chemical to electronic, and lights themselves have gone from gelled lamps to perfectly balanced flourescents. But basically, effects aside, even the photographic look of videos today was not achievable in the 80s.
It also requires, thus, for a DP to be effective in thinking about the grade and being a part of it.
Likewise, ultimately he shot Maps, which without a doubt has to be the most beautifully shot performance video I've seen since Talking Heads' Stop Making Sense. Watch it again. I want to know why more videos aren't shot in beautiful scope. I think Shawn understands the color red on a level I don't and never will. I think he knows how to put a flare on the edge of a frame that speaks volumes on chaotic beauty.
Shawn deserves all the praise he receives.
As for Phoenix, his videos have me convinced that he could direct a feature better than 99% of all video directors out there and I'll bet that's what he's winding up for. You're letting your dislike for hyphenates to cloud your judgment. This is one of the better narrative videos made in quite awhile.
