Is there a way I can listen to these tracks before choosing one? (Besides buying all the albums)

@ leo_b I think the labels want you to use P2P.

www.radarfestival.com

If you asking for free work at least have the decency to put previews of the songs on your site. There are plenty of solutions for streaming protected content.

UPDATE: All these tracks are on the warp online store www.bleep.com except: Psapp - Side Dish Grizzly Bear - Reprise Crazy Girl – The Rebel

You can listen to the preview or if you're smart dl the source file (only mono 96 though)

didn't everyone comment on the last post by radar festival tearing it apart for the bizarre unfair rules?

leo_b, May 29, 2006 at 8:01:20 PM CEST

They should really put a link to bleep.com on the radar site. I'm sure it would encourage more entries if people could listen to the tracks to see if anything inspires them.

cor blimey. If you can't find tracks to listen to on the internet then just email and I'll send, but would appreciate you researching elsewhere if you can - sending out the mp3s takes a while. Tracks will go up on the site for the next festival, for this one, asking people to email is a pretty good way for us to keep a track on whether the promo for the festival is being effective. PLEASE DON"T BITE MY HEAD OFF!!!!!!!!

...I think the festival sounds great! :)

...except that they want 15% of your comission if you make any money off it! :(

Listen Radar guys, it's a really really cool idea to do this, lots of people want to get repped, the industry seems really oversaturated right now, but some of the things just seems a bit too 'kiddish'. It has to be made on a 'mac'? Why is that?

Frankly I just think this kinda lowers the state of the industry in some ways. I dunno, it's like "American Idol" for music video directors or something? Maybe I'm way off. Discuss. Discuss.

ai, May 30, 2006 at 11:08:12 AM CEST

@ echo i'm not a production expert but i think as a director if YOU get 15% of the royalties of the dvd sales of your videos that's kind normal you know (and that's fairly high).

The mac stuff it's because they have a deal with Apple and they will use the regent street apple store in london for promotion.

Now if you don't like it don't do it. Sure the organization seems a bit lousy (no mp3, so-called pdf which are in fact jpegs blablabla) but shall we stop the bitchin now?

i think this make a music video competition thing (like what warp and leaf records etc have been doing) has its good and bad points- on one hand u have a bunch of artists out there dying to get a chance to do a cool project so that they can get some exposure.

one the other hand, u have a bunch of indie record labels that cant afford proper video budgets getting a bunch of people to do 10s of thousands worth of work for them for free. and if its a shit video, they wont show it. they cant loose!

so do u do a music video for these guys for free? well, if ur a lover of the music and want to try and get some exposure for your music i dont see why not.

but do u really want to spend days/weeks/months of your time on something that in the end will end up benefitting the artists and records label more that yourself? or do you spend that time working on something that truly shows your talent? that expressed your work utterly, and does not play second to another artist? if THAT work is good enough, it will get exposure just as much as a music video.

but hey, people like music videos, dont they?

Hi, Caroline here from Radar.

The mac thing is a pain I know, Apple insist in return for hosting the festival. It's a great place to have it though and the Apple name has brought other names to the festival. Channel 4 ideas factory have just agreed to be associated with Radar - which is good promo thing if you don't know of them, they're part of terrestrial UK TV.

Um jpegs/pdfs??? maybe they should just be called documents....

mp3s - asking people to email for them is also a pain sorry, but is invaluable for monitoring whether the Radar promo is working. We'll put mp3 samplers up on the site for the next festival.

The money thing. Just waiting to get some advice about how to reword that part of the rules. The intention is, should we get deals in place that generate revenues - like download deals/DVDs etc - that directors get a share of that revenue. The rules are also flagging up that Radar would expect to earn something from it too, but a lesser proportion. None of those deals have been done yet, but we're working on it and will post news on Antville. I don't know whether that would turn into a big income stream or not, but Radar will be negotiating on behalf of directors. Feedback on that very welcome.
