Boys of Scandinavia "Worse Than a Girl" Dir: Liisa Lounila
"Worse Than a Girl" was originally recorded to accompany Lounila's "time-slice" images in an installation, but the song outgrew the piece to dominate Finland's dance charts and club scene. Boys of Scandinavia were the resident band/DJs at the now defunct Music is Better club in Helsinki, and have begun touring as their own group.
The song sounds familiar, as either a Joy Division or Bauhaus ripoff (with a White Stripes bass riff?).
Lounila's technique is to use an arsenal of pin-hole cameras, set up to emulate "bullet-time," that careen through decisive moments in smoky Finnish hipster bar.
Kind of a logical step for someone who wants to try and make that effect work with super low tech equipment. The process is done well. I just wish there was more than just the process to this video. But it is really neat either way.
I don’t see the point. Time slice has already been done in a low fi pinhole way by one of its originators Tim Macmillan. www.timeslicefilms.com So aesthetically and technologically this does nothing new. Ok so the track outgrew the "installation" but frankly the track is a pretty dud listen. So this leaves us with a bunch of art school type poseurs whipping up a video with an out of date technique and everyone swallowing it whole because they are to afraid to question "Art".
